Howdy folks, this is the worst day of work I've had in a looong time. Grateful for Julie's show.

My birthday was Sunday, the year I was born the sun went into Pisces a day early (on 2/18), so I was born approximately six hours away from the exact time. Very cuspy.

(Not that I believe in any of that stuff, of course.)

I was in eighth grade in 1992, walking to school with my friend Robby. He had foam headphones that he surprised me by putting over my ears and said, "Listen to this." It was "In Bloom," off of Nevermind. First I had ever heard of Nirvana.

Almost immediately I begged my mother to take me to the tape shop, where I bought Nevermind and Bleach. Even at age 12, I knew the cool kid thing to do was to get "the old stuff."

Bleach immediately became my favorite album. Still love 1980s Nirvana the most. Brutal, ragged noise. Just perfect.

NoiseRawk with MelodicPop - similar to the Replacements, an earlier inspiration for them and other grunge bands.

The 'Mats "For Sale: Live at Maxwell's" from '86 is one of their few good live albums, but what really struck me listening to it, where their "evolution" of the sound comes through - they were loud, noise, postpunk - yet they kept the melodic pop and power pop influences, and ended up being so positive in their energy despite the "grungey" sound. Particularly through their covers, "Black Diamond", "Nowhere Man", even "Hitchin' A Ride"!

Cobain was altogether quite a tightrope act & an impossible nut to crack on his own.
He was Societal in his subject matter & concerns - & one of those tagged 'voice of a generation' ...& Artists have been targeted for less. But he wasn't quite John Lennon openly speculating about mass convergence on a major Party Convention or anything close...
Nor was he the only one of that scene & era to be addict or to overdose or to kill themselves.

Seems to me us Liberals always flabbergasted by the blatant CounterFactual ideologues of these peoples. Which I reckon is being less than Factually informed about Human Nature & the need for Story people have - a Story that validates their personal emotional & societal needs. (As per what Jung & Campbell made explicit.) It's the kinda Ape we are.
& the Machiavellis & Hitlers have all known it perfectly well - & even wrote the explicit Manuals on it.
I think the FoxNews heads *know* (to varying degrees) it's entertainment pandering to their emotions - & not real reporting.
But ...that is NOT WHAT MATTERS to them.
Maybe that's all self-evident. But it's not where our emphasis seems to be most often...
