Obscure musical gems, avant experimentation, and classics worth rehearing. A conurbation of Leslie speakers, timbales, plungers, arch-tops, tablas, and squeaky reeds. Black ties, pork pies, Cuban boots, Nudie suits, bobbysocks, turtlenecks, and high-heeled sneakers. Jazz is the north star but it’s a wide universe, so says The Laughing Clock.

Never really thought about this before now ... "Around the same time the song came out, the expression "ballin' the jack" was used by railroad workers to mean "going at full speed." The show was quite enjoyable, but more mainstream than the fare we get here. Young pianist Jordan Williams impressed me in particular. Also of note was the trumpeter Wallace Roney, Jr, who was pretty good, though with a weird stage demeanor. I kept thinking, "Wallace Roney as your dad, and Geri Allen as your mom... no pressure!"

Dean:

I hear in Moran a sympathy with Branford. Always bumping into and across expectations. Frankly, I'm a fan of artists who mash up conservatism with experimentation.

I did gather as much. I'm a librarian, professionally and in many respects personally. We are all about being affirmatively conservative, but also eager to spread out and learn new practices.

@doctorj, I can send you a file of my collected WFMU comments. That way you can review them from time to time and keep them at the front of your mind. Jeff saw Moran's show in the city and felt much as I did, if I remember correctly.

Digging this last free-form set as well.

That said, if you’re actually there, no harm in spending 10 min checking them out. Maybe you’ll like it more than I did.

Puppy keeping me in the house; was here for Jeff's show, for Stork, DJGG, Julie, now DJ Peter. What'll I listen to at work tomorrow? (Joe McGasco won't be bad, mostly miss him catching up with the Sunday shows on the Drummer Stream).
