That would've been my preference actually. First NYE party that I've ever attended that didn't have music. I tried to passive-aggressively prod the host into playing some tunes by asking him what he thought of the speakers he had by his entertainment unit and he said he liked them when he used them but hadn't hooked them up since he moved into the house. Besides some imitation of the Hawaiian steel guitar sound, the "feedback" loop of mainland America to Hawaii and back to the mainland likewise deserves credit for the Surf Rock sound. Much like Kurosawa, bringing Western flicks to samurai films and sending them right back to Western flicks.
