Mory Kante / Kora Plus / African Mix

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

First hour: Mixed bag of African music

Second hour: Mory Kante interview recorded at WOMEX plus music from his new cd Sabou.

Third hour: "Kora plus": Recordings by musicians who, like Mory Kante, have taken the traditional harp-lute of the West African griot into new ensemble contexts.

An alumnus of the legendary Super Rail Band of Bamako, Mali (where he replaced Salif Keita as vocalist), Guinean-born Mory Kante was one of the first artists to successfully fuse African roots music and dancefloor beats: His "Yeke Yeke" was a global hit in the eighties. The song still has legs; it was recently featured in Leonardo DiCaprio's film The Beach.

Though he's famous for electrifying roots music, Kante's latest CD Sabou (Riverboat Records / World Music Network) is all-acoustic. He'll give us the story behind the songs and tell us why he pulled the plug.

Mory Kante will make peform in New York (for the first time in over a decade) on Friday January 7 at SOB's, 204 Varick Street and Saturday January 8 as part of Globalfest, a star-studded one-night world music festival at Joe's Pub and the Public Theatre, 425 Lafayette Street.

Rob’s interview with Mory Kante was recorded at the WOMEX world music expo in Essen, Germany on October 28, 2004.
