LG, He's old, needed help to walk to the piano. His playing isn't the powerhouse force it once was. And it was an odd trio-he had a woodwind player and a bass pllaying with him, but they almost never playsed together (the horn player, most often on a flute, and the bass, who doubled on cello, mostly did duets, jazz standards or Abdullah Ibrahim compositions. Abdullah Ibrahim alternated with them, playing solo piano. Having said all that, he was fabulous; fingers still fleet, tunes still wonderful. I was very glad I got to see the show. (I've seen him since the 1908a many times, hopefullly he'll still be around playing for a while).

Way up-thread, a suggestion for two harpists to include: Andrew Lawrence-King, whose solo and ensemble recordings are uniformly beautiful, and Benjamin Bagby, who tours the world reciting Beowulf accompanying himself on harp when he isn't leading Sequentia.

A buddy of mine was in Berlin a few months back for a conference. In his free time he visited a museum with a Werner Herzog exhibit. He spied Vandermark taking in the show, too. Then he realized that V had performed the night before in town!

I spent a few years in Chicago before ultimately moving back to my hometown of Detroit. I saw Mars Williams a few times: once with Extraordinary Popular Delusions at Beat Kitchen. They played there pretty much every Monday night and I remember that one time, after they finished, his shoes made this squeaking sound on the black and white tiled floor and he said “see, I don’t even need the horn!” It was very funny 😄.
