Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from November 17, 2023 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I have a friend who said "I'm done with those" re: colonoscopies
  2:10pm
Dean:

At some point age-wise, it is prudent to be done with them. I'm still in the so-called sweet spot for the next few years.

Hey, speaking of stones!

'Crossroads' movie with Ralph. Most of the actual Gittar by SteveVai I believe
...film doing for Blues what 'Back to the Future' did for RnR - in terms of a narrative of a young contempo white boy representing a classic African-American Musical Form for our Hollywood consumption...

Ah, got it, RRN63. Thanks. A colleague at work recently reported to me that he had visited our Music Library to check out a book by Vai, a sort of "How You Can Play Just Like Me Without Practicing, It's So Easy."

When I was a kid in 5th grade, my dad bought a 1947 Packard. You could open a card table in the back seat, it was that roomy! AND, it had running boards, gangster-style! Referring to one of the Robert Johnson songs played earlier, I loked up "terraplane" and discovered it was a vintage automobile like that Packard. But Johnson used it as a metaphor for his girlfriend's being "used" by some scoundrel while he was away. Anyway, that's the way I read it. Any other interpretations out there?

Cooder's best(?) soundtrack could be the weird Trespass thing, featuring Jon Hassell and Jim Keltner. But the best part is the last track, which is Junior Brown's "Party Lights."

I've told this story before. When he was alive, Warren Dewey had a stereo store just blocks from my house. I'd drop in on him just to chat now and then. Once he told me that Scorcese called him to report that he'd found one of Warren's earliest recordings as an engineer. It was Hendrix, and it's on the Jimi release.

That "Phonograph Blues" was just another blues song that talked about sex(in this case, impotence). Mr. White did a great job on this Robert Johnson tune.
