Years ago I posted to YouTube an appearance by Buffy Sainte-Marie on “To Tell the Truth”:

www.youtube.com...

Over the years it’s gotten occasional comments (mostly favorable) but as you can imagine the commentary has picked up considerably in the past week or so. Most of the comments are variations of “how ironic that she appeared on a show called To Tell the Truth” and “it turns out they were ALL imposters”.

Gus’s take on it all is so much more nuanced and refreshing.

Well - we're in an era where we can actually analyze our ancestry - to a certain extent - with the DNA of no more than a single hair or the spittle you'd leave on a dinner fork. Genetics are a New World - just as AI is. Lots of surprises in store for lots of people there as per Race. @ some point - you could even be Cloned...
But that's not what the Buffy thing is about I don't think...
It would appear she knowingly falsified the whole Story - as much as Dylan Self-Mythologized in early years, & repeatedly.
Question then is - how does this singular deception - starting in a wholly different Era - but uninterrupted into Now - contextualize (I hesitate to say ...'color') everything else she ever did Musically & as an Activist. Which is - a whole Lot.

my understanding of the situation is that Buffy was adopted as a child by a First Nations family and never knew her birth mother. She was raised as an Indigenous person and was all she knew. She may or may not have been Indigenous by birth but was by the community.

That's the story she settled on, but it's a fabrication on her part, the details of which varied initially. She wasn't adopted, she was born to Italian American parents in Massachusetts. The CBC investigation unearthed a lot.

Understandable. 'Free As A Bird' from the mid90s I thot - a very good Lennon-penned & sung Late Beatles Track ...but the Beatle missing there was not in fact John - it was Beatle#5, George Martin. (Jeff Lynne tho not an illogical sub - being nonetheless ...Jeff Lynne.)
'Real Love' tho ...I thot Lennon's 'raw demo' version as used in the 'Imagine' biopic was in fact much better.
This one ...it's mixed.
Not to say in fact OverProduced. But I don't blame them. It does sound like exactly what it is, you're correct. But that's not all bad ...Lennon hadn't begun to Develop it - but who better to carry on that process than Sir Macca ? Answer: No One.
& the Technical aspect of pulling John's Voice (on the short list of My Favorite Musical Instruments Ever ...ymmv, as I suspect Irwin's might well...) - it's frankly amazing. Not only sounds incredible - but the implications for DeMixing other Recordings - very broadly - are king of staggering.
But they don't stop there : They pull Beatle Vocals out of their 60s work ...& on & on.
So ...as a FINAL BEATLES SINGLE - it's both kind of Minimal as Composition ...& Encompassing for Eras & Productions @ once...

When Voltron was young, he would pull this stuffed seagull off the string that tied it to the stick -- which made it a TOY -- and hunt it around the apartment unleashing his savage hunting warble until he thought it was properly terrified, and then he would hold it under water in the water dish and scream until it drowned. While the dog looked at me like, "I gotta drink out of that thing. I thought you were in CHARGE around here!"

Not all their motives are pure is what I'm saying.

Maybe not the precise term.
An opportunistic betrayal of good faith with Macca, certainly.
& I think the right thing for anyone to do (Jacko is quite dead) is to sell (not even Give even) TheBeatles the rights to their own Songwriting awlready.

the main, or most recent, person i know who went to nashville to "make it" ...certainly has talent, but very generic, predictable country pop music.
