I love the old UK money, particularly as an American trying to figure how much money they were even talking about. From wikipedia: "The price £4 6s 3¾d was pronounced: "four pounds six shillings and thruppence three-farthings"." To be fair, I'm still not sure how much money that is.

I previously said that there's "two ways to divide the Cocteau Twins into two" - you could either divide them into Garlands/1982 and EVERYTHING after; or else divide into 1985 and before, and 1986 and after. Head Over Heels started adding the textured sounds to enrich their previously lo-fi, gothy, post-punk tracks. Treasure adds even more texture, possibly after they had worked with This Mortal Coil project, but still a heavier sound than their later dream pop material.

I succeeded in buying a farthing and some sixpence from an antique shop in England - there were a lot of thruppence and tuppence pieces but sixpence were more valuable and kept behind the counter (maybe that was the first coin to have actual silver back then, as dimes and above in the U.S. used to contain silver).

"Spandau Ballet" - named after a piece of bathroom graffiti, almost certainly from a British soldier who had been at Spandau Prison in Berlin. One of the only 4-nation allied institutions to last, the prison for high-level Nazis (and eventually only Rudolf Hess) had the US, UK, France and USSR rotate guards every month - a Spandau "ballet" of switching.

I heard the story of their name a while back, and the Berlin connection is interesting. Wiki history focuses on Hess in the middle: "Friend and writer Robert Elms suggested they change their name to Spandau Ballet, a phrase which he told them he had seen written on a wall on a weekend trip to Berlin: “Rudolf Hess, all alone, dancing the Spandau Ballet”."
