Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

What strikes me is how the preferred voice for popular songs changed, from operatic fluttering to something much more natural, courtesy of Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby. Even actual opera singers don't use their opera voices for their "popular" recordings any more.

This show always makes me aware of how different the voices for show tunes are from rock music. Sometimes they sounds almost too affected, but I know it's just a style thing.

That was the miracle of electrical recording - they no longer had to be really loud to be heard over the orchestra! That's what led to the crooner era!

What is it with the years in titles -- "Gold Diggers of 1935," "Ants in Your Pants of 1939?" A sense of newness? An if you liked that, then you'll like this? A sell-by date used to push new product?
