In the Summer of 1974, A friend and I saw Hampton Hawes playing for free in the band shell at MacArthur Park in Los Angeles. I'm sure we heard about it on KPFK, the Pacifica station in L.A. Recently, I was at Poohbah Records in Pasadena. Ron, the owner had a big pile of Hawes records upstairs. I told him about when I saw him and he said "Yeah, his ex-wife brought them in and told me 'I want all that motherfuckers trash out of my house!'

Denicola appears to have been considerably older than the rest of the crowd on that DIW session. From Wikipedia:

"DeNicola began his career playing drums in firehouse bands, polka bands, and nightclubs. He served in the United States Army Air Forces in 1946 and 1947. In 1948, he toured the Midwest with Donn Trenner and later performed at venues in San Francisco. After returning to New Jersey to help his grandparents run their tavern, he continued touring and performing with jazz musicians, including Freddy Martin, Harry James, Billy Butterfield, and Charlie Shavers. DeNicola also taught music in the Trenton Public Schools. After earning his master's degree, DeNicola worked as an adjunct professor at Trenton State College from 1972 until his retirement in 1992. After retiring from teaching, he continued to perform."

He died at 79 in 2006.

It's like having the Philosopher's Stone or the Ark of the Covenant presented by valley girls or something ...but hey KCR is Collegiate, so there it is. Yerknow - they're sincere enuff... Every Station has its idiosyncrasies (...not to put too fine a point on that...) That my nervous system is so reflexively reactive to on-air presenters surely indicates my life is too much about listening to crap online all the time...
