Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from October 2, 2023 Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Hi Austin. Are you the fill in for the fill in or maybe I misheard when I thought I heard Jan say he was doing the fill in for Hysterica tonight. I did think this would be a bit late at night for Jan...

I was hanging with a friend last weekend, Monday he tested positive for COVID. Tuesday I started getting ill (nothing serious, throat, cough). I tested negative for COVID twice (but I still think there's a good chance that was what I had).

Actually I'm the one helping out for my senile housemate. Good thing I'm not hurt too badly. And I'm glad football practice (I coach kids) was called off tonight, probably for mosquito spraying in the park. And my trip and fall came on the way to an away game, and felt like nothing at the time.

So sad that he killed himself in 1968, just because times had changed. If he had stuck it out a few more years, FM would start to go freeform (hello, WFMU!) and DJs like Dr Demento
and Rodney Bingenheimer would bring back unpredictable insanity to commercial radio. Even Top 40 radio might have worked - he wouldn't be able to play what he wanted, but he could still do his wacky persona, like the Real Don Steele and Gary Owens did. Tragic.
