True Dat-though HE did call himself the king of jazz. His band was a bit on the lumbering side, very of the 20s in sound (but he did hire some jazz players, Bix Biederbeck and Franky Trumbauer most notably. He's often stop a staid arrangement, let the band swing behind one of the jazz players, then go back to the regular 20's big band sound (white big band).

Whiteman did have a lot of good musicians in his band, and it was on the top of the rank of White dance bands. But his jazz cred was never very high, much less royal.
