A while ago I compiled Wiktionary etymologies for various "building block" basic words of English, tracing their Proto-Indo-European roots. "Man" and "human" came about through different journeys, but come from the same PIE root (reconstructed as "dʰǵʰ-ém-ōn") - essentially meaning, "earthling"!
