it sure didn't hurt that many of the SST bands got in the van and hit the road. we saw a lot of these bands live, then bought their records. and once the label was established as tastemakers, we bought anything on the label, and then went to see those bands when they came to town. these guys were, mostly, road dogs.

SST had like an unimpeachable aesthetic. Those little foldout catalogues in the CDs... Certainty meant something if on that label. Never didn't feel underground, a bit more rare ...& so even a touch illicit. Very little has maintained that sort of talismanic charge these days...

The band got their rights back from SST in the '90s because SST never paid royalties. (This is also why Dinosaur JR. and Sonic Youth got their rights back.)

Of course, the whole Industry become Top Down later : Lawyers & Bean Counter Biz People signing a very few Artists for huge advances ...& dropping them fast in they didn't Sell Huge immediately... Maybe that always applied less to the Indy world ...I dunno...
