So I heard actual improvised music last night by three musicians I have never heard of: Joe Baiza (g), Matt Crane (d), and Damon Smith (b). Anyone familiar with them? I enjoyed the show quite a bit. In the middle, they broke out into Ornette's "Peace." Otherwise, all apparently improvised.

coelacanth∅:

Jeff i don't know if you mentioned it because you want others' opinions or not but here's mine:
however much i like to hear a show host speak and the information delivered i prefer longer sets. once/hour is enough for those who play long tracks.
1/2 hour for those who play short tracks.
more mic breaks means more redundancy, for one thing; but mainly it's just for the getting into a groove...each set being a composition of it's own.

...and i really enjoyed hearing Meghan again too... but i still feel this way! she spoke just enough for me.

I'm the same, all my family members get bitten up, they avoid me.
We were warned to bring much DEET to Africa, malaria and all (still taking malaria prophylaxis). Turns out, it's "Dry" season there (the other season, of course, is "wet" season). Not many bugs out during dry season (the few around still did manage to find my family members, though).

is "doctorjazz" evolved from something else very similar; and so "Dr. Molly" can evolve into, say," doctormusic"?

There's interesting & relevant Rap ~ HipHop for certain - just listen to BillyJam's program. But this strikes me as both sonically repetitive (& I'm using restraint saying this relative to how I really feel about it) & same old formulaic self-aggrandizement for content.

Thinking of a little interview with JerryGarcia he's asked (in whatever year) about Rap - & he says - well, first off - it's not Music. It's Talking. That's what 'Rapping' means - Talking. & the people who get good @ it aren't getting good @ Music.
Of course - that's reductive of the sonic aspects of Sampling & Mixing & Producing it. Yet - it's a relevant observation of fundamentals.
