I saw Los Lobos at a free, noon street party they do in Ann Arbor Thursdays all summer. Huge crowd. Beautiful weather. Insanely great set. They did their family hits/covers type set and just blew people away. I feel like we all take that band a little for granted because they're so drama free, or something. I'd love to see Rev Horton Heat again. I saw him April 1994 at the Paradise in Boston, Possum Dixon was the opener. One of the best, craziest, most intense live shows I've ever seen. I couldn't hear properly for several days. I was standing center stage right in front of Jim's Shure 55 mic, and Fender Twins cranked up. Taz Bentley was still the drummer. People kept sending shots up to the band, and the more they played and drank the more intense it got. Quite a few fistfights broke out in the crowd, including my friend getting punched in the head then returning the favor to a drunken idiot slam dancing. The entire floor was a sea of beer bottles by the end of the night. Possum Dixon wasn't well received by the rockabilly crowd, and after they covered "Like A Virgin" someone landed a full beer onto the guy's amp and it shorted out, so they got them off the stage. Crazy...and a terrific show. I'd see The Rev again if he comes my way.

Have seen Elvis C. many times (since '78) & he was usually great, but the last time (at Forest Hills) was the weakest performance I've ever seen. The sound was so-so, & he couldn't quite keep up with the band at times. Maybe he was just tired (I know he had some health problems a few years ago) but it was an odd, low-energy kind of set (a lot of early stuff, w/some newer songs thrown in). This was pre-pandemic, so it's troubling to hear that he hasn't improved (or maybe just had an off night). That was the tour w/Blondie, who were great (even w/Chris Stein sitting for most of the show).

NL has often said that he's not very prolific as a songwriter. Maybe it's wiser for him to release singles/EPs at this point. It could take forever for him to come up with an album's worth of material.

Right. And I'm a super fan. I think every Charlie record has worthwhile moments. Even when the vocal group overdubs are awful. P&P has him playing his own piano, which producers even had him not doing at some point. Crazy. Check t out. Streaming for sure.

Yes, exactly....nice tunes but he sometimes sounds like he's tryinig to sound dumb/child--like. I wasn't totally aware of the story behind his early, electric stuff (& why he gave it up); that Modern Lovers album (with the "darker" material) is great, even though he disavows it now. Guess he doesn't even play w/a band now, & considers electricity an evil force, or something.

Just recently I went looking for some video from that Spring '94 Horton Heat tour, and found a few full shows from Fall '94. The Dec '94 SF video on YouTube is close to what it felt like in Boston but not quite as crazy. The Paradise "stage" was only a foot or so off the audience floor so we were literally right there with the band. Still very cool to see the vids, good memories

I remember going on a tour of RCA Studio B in Nashville in the 80s and the guide was demonstrating how the Nashville Sound was created, starting with Ronnie Milsap singing w/acoustic guitar. Then one by one, the guide would dial up another track - bass, drums, organ, pedal steel, strings. backing vocals, timpani, triangle,, etc. It was all i could do not to shout, stop!

I found out recently that that line in Hard Day's Night was in in-joke. The actor who played his grandfather, Wilfred Brambell, was in a Britcom, "Steptoe & Son" (yes, the one that was Americanized into "Sanford & Son"), where he was described as a "dirty old man," as opposed to how Paul & co. referred to him.

I'm guessing the fuzz box on The Ventures' GH cover was a Mosrite FuzzRite, only because Mosrite was literally the Ventures' main gear company and endorsement in the late 60's and early 70's. If Mosrite had a new fuzz to go to market, the Ventures would use it. Harrison's could very well be a Fender Blender, but he also had one of the first Gibson Maestro Fuzztone FZ-1 pedals in the UK, as early as '63 which they tried on sessions for She Loves You and Lennon later on Don't Bother Me. And then there's the Vox ToneBender fuzz as well. Since Fender shipped all that gear to the band for Get Back/Let It Be, Harrison could have gotten a Blender from them and used it. Great tone whatever it was!

It's hard to tell, the Mosrite Fuzzrite has its own character and it's been said a good example of it was Ron Ashton with The Stooges, but Ron also used other fuzz pedals like the Vox and the Fuzzface. It would also depend on George's guitar, if he was using a Tele or Strat it would trigger the fuzz different than a Les Paul, which would drive it harder. The Fender Blender is a pretty unique tone, if you can try one out, or a clone of it, that would be the best test. I'm personally a fan of the Gibson Maestro FZ fuzz sound, and I have the silver Boss FZ-5 on my pedalboard since it clones the FZ-1, FuzzFace, and Octavia but I only use it for the FZ-1 channel to get the 60's LA studio fuzz. I'd check out an FZ-5 too

Yes! The pedal market went crazy and shows no signs of calming down. Better to home brew than pay 300+ for someone doing the same thing in some of these cases. But if someone built or can build the exact sound/tone of the Ed King "Incense And Peppermints" fuzz tone in a simple pedal, I'm all in! My Boss FZ-5 comes close, I can't afford an original Maestro like King used in '66 :)
