A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hey Trouble and makers and Shakers…
Reggae tunes, nice. On roof with the kid hanging the laundry. And…goddamnit, is this that smoke smell again? Think so.
We’re hanging ‘em anyway. Guess we’re using the classic NY mentality of “gotta do whatcha gotta do.”
Off to the Louis Armstrong Center dedication ceremony soon. Which the groundskeeper told me of last month but of which there’s nothing online. Gonna take a classmate of theirs and his Dad, a pianist composer from China.
Catch up later, or not.

I agree with Trouble on availability of reggae in the 90s. From my experience, (good) reggae, dub and early ska records were hard to find until the mid-late 90s when Trojan, Bllod & Fire, etal started reissuing records and comps and sketchy bootlegs of janky original pressings started showing up.

My understanding is that many of the presses were outside so "ephemera" would get mixed in. Grass (as trouble mentioned), grit, sand, a lots of bad pressings. Then the labels are frequently off center, sometimes covering the actual grooves - haha. The covers typically are poorly printed, cut, folded and glued. And it's genuinely awesome.

The pressing plants were pretty resourceful and regularly melted down records that didn't sell.

I heard Rancid cover “The Harder They Come” at the Tibetan Freedom Concert in 97. When I saw a used copy of the soundtrack at Princeton Record Exchange I said “This is that thing that Rancid likes. I guess I will buy it.”
The rest, as they say, is history.

The early 80s were a good time to be in Madison, WI, and a great time to appreciate and fall in love with roots Reggae, (if that's what I call it.) Every musical event had a Reggae band, and they were always welcome and danced to. Fortunate to see Steel Pulse when they came through. Good DJ/ dub Reggae show on WORT right before New Needles punk/new wave show on Saturdays. Needless to say, you know where I seek sanctuary on Sunday mornings.

LPs definitely too but Jamaican pressed 45s are easier to come by. Jamaican LPs are easy to spot too. The album art graphic design and fonts aren't as "tight" as say Trojan artwork is. If you see an album cover like this, take a peek inside at the record.

Hi Trouble, noting all of your great female reggae performers, I suggest checking out singer/songwriter June "J.C." Lodge. It's smooth, melodic music with notable Jamaican musicians backing her on originals and covers such as by the Bee Gees.
