I work at Lowell High School (alumni of Jack Kerouac, thank you very much), and because of a long morning drive, an expectation to sign in at, ugh, 7:35 in the morning, and a drive to write, I'm up at 4, and at my desk by 4:45. Anyway, something that I've put on many bulletin boards, and I'll put it here: you join the ranks of the other wonderful DJs in this time slot who create that soundtrack of the time of day when the hardcore evening folks meet the hardcore morning folks. 4AM is the time for the outliers. As I wrote to Dan Morfitt, it's the time that Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston, the timeless, eternal, madly-in-love vampire couple from Jim Jarmusch's "Only Lovers Left Alive" rub elbows with the bakers and mail carriers and teachers such as myself, and we drink our coffee as they take a break from their usual drink choices to have a last glass of wine before bed. I, meanwhile, munch on fresh baked bread with butter melting on it and drink my cup of coffee as I ask them about Lower New York in the late 1970s, when Television and Talking Heads played their early shows at CGGB. Because they were there. They were everywhere, and never missed out on any scene. And for them, in their world of eternal life, it wasn't any great matter to be there in Warhol's factory watching his avant garde films, and musing on the nature of time as they watched Warhol's "Empire," which is simply a five-hour view of The Empire State Building from The Chrysler Building. And yet, as I listen to their words, eat my breakfast, and listen to "Le Premier Bonheur Du Jour," I understand what would make someone watch such a movie. Some moments are those almost-static moments where the moment appears frozen, save for subtle movements. This is the time of day where every small gesture has magnified meaning. The music you play has been a welcome soundtrack. Thanks so much!
