basically everyone who took part in those experiments was treated shabbily! they set up fake interviews for a job for undergrads, and then when people came in for the "interview" they did things like shine bright lights, plays loud noisy audio, have the interviewer be really antagonistic etc. it was all just a way of recording how people reacted to it all. let's just say a review board wouldn't pass this kind of thing anymore

Yes, Lehman had a mic clipped to the bell of his horn and some kind of brass attachment on the neck of his horn (dangling wire). He’d remove the mouth piece for those “key clacking” bits but there was also some kind of processing of the wind blowing through the horn. The pedals looked like regular pedals, couldn’t see any other gadgets.
Iyer has some dials and doodads on the Fender Rhodes and a laptop. The Steinway was unaltered as far as I could see.
Sorey moved his manuscript stand mid-performance to the side of his ride cymbal and began banging on it as part of his kit.

He fueled my fascination for tracking which drummers use matched grip CDs traditional.
Yesterday was looking at YouTube videos of military bands playing “beat to quarters” (aka “general quarters” aka “battle stations”) and had a “duh” moment: if you have a drum slung over your shoulder, it’s very hard to play matched grip if the drum is on your left hip: traditional grip is easier.
A lot of the OG drummers would have studied military rudiments.

Not a drummer, BUT… at a big band clinic, one mentor said something that really landed with me: the sax section all play saxes, but the rhythm section all play different instruments. So bassists need to know rudimentary piano and drums. I took that to heart.
More recently Ethan Iverson has suggested that all classical musicians should learn basic swing grooves on drums, then they’d play American music better. I agree!

Good news or Bad news? Email from Bandcamp says No Business has "very last CD copies" of the Sam Rivers Archive series: Emanation. I have the CD but clicked through out of curiosity... they now have it on Bandcamp digital, before was only available as CD I believe.

ALERT! More importantly, many of the volumes are now listed as FREE DOWNLOAD... act fast, people!

I can see maybe Session Players feeling uncredited. If not in fact having less than speficifc memory of what they're on or not... There may be - with Purdie for instance - some element of Black - White race territorialism involved as regards market share of Pop Music ?? TheBeatles added Motown & U.S. R&B - & never hesitated a nanosecond to let it be known. But they also dominated the scene to the detriment of others...
