I lived for a couple of years in the mid 70s in San Antonio. Saw Bongo Joe regularly in the area near the Riverwalk there. A few years later found the Arhoolie record.

Curiously Tina Turner is also associated with my time in San Antonio. I worked in a record store. An artist would come in looking for music to play to inspire his work. He wanted to do a series of lithographs with Mississippi river delta theme. My suggestions were not clicking for him. A co-worker suggested Ike & Tina's Proud Mary. That clicked and a lovely series of lithographs resulted.

Some of Cage's later music shifted from controlling the music to controlling the performers. Like Merce Cunningham designed moves on a computer and broke bodies to conform. Great visions, but not great people

It’s weird- I was thinking about Ike n Tina the very morning she died. Was pondering how much Ike did in discovering and developing Tina, which put him on that list of horrible people that you would not want to know personally, but whose musical legacy lives on. See: Leadbelly, The Beach Boys father Murray Wilson, Joe Meek, Phil Spector… the Problematic Hall o’ Fame!
