Handy, that's a long but very pretty train ride. I made it to Eugene. If you aren't used to long train rides I'd recommend bringing a blanket, sandwiches, a neck pillow and some noise cancelling headphones.

So why not drive? That's a beautiful area to travel, and you'd have a lot more freedom to pursue your own whims. NE California is one of the darkest areas on earth - a dark sky park. You should go check out the Milky way there - spectacular.

Ugh, no thanks. No interest in renting a car for that entire length of time. We're going to travel from friends to friends and see them. K8 doesn't drive on the highway, and I have no desire to deal with taking a car into or out of LA, SF, Oakland, Portland, or Seattle. I have a feeling there are enough cars on those roads.

Hmm, hard to say. You can probably jump in on any of the first 4 or 5 Laundry Files novels. And yes, that's the series about a British bureaucracy that fights Lovecraftian brain-sucking horrors from beyond this dimension, and explains how magic is just the result of solving advanced mathematical theorems.

Also, Accelerando is a good stand-alone work, though I prefer the first section (originally published as a novella on its own) to the second and third sections.
