I mean, a guy who I used to work with years ago had a son who started, at 16, to hang with a crowd in school who generally neglected their school work, smoked a lot of weed, etc. Eventually moved on to harder stuff in very short order alas. So, I remember my work-friend telling me that the kid was in some kind of residential program. Two months later he's "allowed" home for a weekend visit. That following week, work friend not at work; a few days later he's back and confides in me that the kid had hidden a shitload of drugs under the floorboards of his closet, snuck out a window (in winter) went to a wooded area, and took his entire stash at once. Was pulled from a small lake in the woods, naked and freezing, but still alive. Of course the program was some Church related bullshit which pretty much tried to "pray the addiction away" or some shit. Kid almost died. Work friend wound up getting his son into proper supervised chemical rehab, but the kid came so so close to dying by a half assed suicide attempt.

Not that you said it, but I'm definitely not in agreement that Monty Python is sadistic. There is suffering in Monty Python, but probably not more or less than in the real world. What there is in Python is a keen eye for the real absurdity that is, and an even keener imagination for the absurdity that could be.

That's terrible, but not an unfamiliar story. Lots of people went missing or ended up doing desperate things and got locked up trying to get to safety. If someone is purposely trying to overdose, you could only imagine what happened to them in there. Hope he's in a safe place now.

Idk, there's a vast difference between a live image of a human being getting branded with a red hot iron while people sit idly by eating dinner while enjoying it as a form of entertainment. Compared to a silly looking cartoon character getting flattened out by one object or another and then suddenly retaining its shape. There's no comparison

Yeah, the dead parrot one is a classic for sure. I still remember when I finally convinced my father to tune in and it was a "typical day in the life of an American Stockbroker". He walks out of his house with bombs and gun fire going off around him and walks into a newstand to grab a paper. The woman behind the counter is topless and that's when my mother walked in the room and freaked out. "What are you watching with the kids?" Pretty much the last time I got them to "watch" Python when it was on. =)

Yes very much so. The Sketches get quoted by us endlessly - but actually watching the Python episodes - it becomes abundantly apparent that the overall gist was playing with & parodying Form itself. They had all had backgrounds in TV earlier - & by 1969 had mastered it enuff to do this.

Whenever I have bad insomnia, I put random Monty Python episodes on and drift off to sleep. I think it's this dual thing of being a happy childhood memory - and I practically know every word from the series by heart - and also does this thing where it disengages my rational mind and untethers me from real world concerns.
