As vast & varied & significant & deep & mysterious as the great Continent of Jazz is
- it's surprisingly easy for me to tag my Faves :
Coltrane #1
...& Monk 2nd only to him
...then yeah the vertical distances get larger for a but - & then less exactly perpendicular...
Actually think of Monk as like SydBarrett - in someone not strictly NeuroNormal giving us one transparent window into an entirely other mode of perception. Art can do many things - but that's probly one of the rarest ~ most rarified...

Blissland:

I think the Pop music genre proper came into being just incidentally in the early 70s when the styles began to diverge from actual commercial appeal. So ironically you get Pop music that's not really popular.

'Unpopular Pop'
- yeah the word can mean two things ...or @ least two (I suppose)
- namely, releases actually Popular
...well, what does that mean. How many Copies produced, distributed & heard by how many people - much less purchased ...that's a whole discussion ...but maybe not too painful a one
...or - Stylistic markers like upbeat melodicism as a Genre...

Yeah - the idea that the Dead cannot play, sing, write or record - there is evidence to the contrary that they were pretty Musical & serious about it all ...tho of course they never stopped showing up in places & playing - without aggressive ambitions. A great & confounding thing about Modernism & the 20th Century is all the Labels began to melt &/or get translucent due to various technologies & sociologies... In fact I posit the fact alone that the Population of the World has doubled in my lifespan alone strains the definitions of 'Folk' or 'Popular' or 'Classical' ...the idea that 1960s 'Pop' like TheBeatles is 'Classical' seems to be coming into more relief recently among some - I reckon we've long behaved as if this were so...

Which makes the point that Pop is often specifically Commercial in intent ...& likely Disposable & temporary like Fast Food (with which it shares even a name)... Whereas 'Classical' has a specific subtextual implication of something Permanent & of lasting value...

Pete Townshend probly coined the term 'Power Pop' in 1966 to distinguish themselves (TheWho) from the 'heavier' groups coming along - whose Weaponry was pioneered by TheWho in fact...

I guess I mean extremely catchy classical music with fairly straightforward chord changes and lyrics about being a teenager, also the pieces have to be between 2 and 3 minutes long, and you have to be able to drink and smoke at the shows, and you probably have to stand at the shows, also it's dark, lyrics have to be pretty straightforward, definitely need kit drums, probably a couple guitars, a bass, one lead singer and some backup singers doing harmony, maybe we can move some of the orchestral instruments to the side of the stage...
