I had some difficulty with Bechet's really tight but insane vibrato for a while, but I got to like it. Soprano sax and clarinet can sound similar, to be not so useful, sop sax is more "metallic" (??!!?). Not sure how else to describe it. It did fall out of favor until Coltrane resurrected it.

Clarinet, from what I understand (again, as a lapsed guitar player) is harder in the fingering aspect-when you change registers, the fingering changes (which doesn't happen on a sax, you control the octave with your breath, same fingering for a C though). Soprano sax isn't different from other saxes as far as fingering is concerned, but I've read that keeping those pitches in perfect tune is very difficult (at least more difficult than a tenor or alto).

Well - I took Alto Sax as a kid for a few years (never practice - went home & played Gittar by ear ...which is me in a nutshell...) - & just find that when I pick up a Clarinet - it's sometimes Squeaky when I don't want to be.
