On one painting job I was on, I had to wait until the drywall and mud were done before I started. I didn't have to wait long. Those drywall guys work fast. They'd do a whole room in about 20 minutes, and a whole house in like 3 hours, including setup and cleanup.

My take on ы is that it's like English "uh" and "ee" combined -- but you activate your back vocal cords for the "uh" part, while shaping the front of your mouth pretty much like the "ee" sound (but without smiling). Simultaneously somehow (so comes out as one sound, not as two sounds or even a glide). But the back (lower vocal chord) generation part is what's crucial, and what sets it off from the more familiar, fully frontal "ee" sound.
