A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Nice grey day to you all, Trouble and Troublemakers. Great vibe in the selections, as always.

Went to a dream place last night in this decaying city of ours dominated by corporate franchises and financial parasites. A place for the People. Indeed, simply called peoplesforum.org
Explicitly socialist, as displayed on the awning. A hub for education, films, reading groups, author presentations, poetry, music, activist engagement. There’s a cafe/bar, an impressive library (soon to be lending), bookstore and the Eslanda and Paul Robeson theater that shows films.

Last night they showed a film called “Powerlands” (ccrjustice.org...). Was a loving, uplifting and in-depth look at how Indigeneous People, from the Navajos to tribes in the Philippines, Mexico and Brazil are fighting back against the local corporate onslaught of mining in their communities - and winning. Stories told through the eyes of the women who often lead the resistance.

Highly recommended. Personally, I’ve needed some real, connective uplift. The fact that a film sought these people struggling and gave their causes a platform, and that through it a new, invigorated sense of community developed, is pretty much what it’s all about. Especially in such an alienating society dominated by social media, having to have convenience at any cost, consumerism and the capitalist treadmill.

The Starless Sea sounds fantastic Nelo. I'll check it out, thank you! And I can't recommend Labyrinths enough. There's a story called The Circular Ruins where the protagonist dreams a man piece by piece. It's hypnotic. Love that place, TDK and Trouble!
Wonderful example of people-power preserving our own history and providing a repository for understanding where we come from, revering those who came before us in the struggle for a better world.

I remember just after Occupy going down to Gowanus to pick up some May Day posters, pamphlets and flyers. Was so encouraging and inspiring to encounter graphic artists and archivists disseminating the crucial art necessary to going forward while preserving for the future what we were doing.

The film last night begins with a middle-aged Navajo woman speaking as the camera sweeps the breathtaking panorama of the Southwest, about how she can trace her descendants back, in light of the grotesque specter of the international mining company upending their lives by savaging their land and poisoning their water, *85 generations*! Just one of those goosebumps moments, of which there were a few.

These places we’re talking about are so critical in the development of deeper and more personal bonds. When one doesn’t care to learn the real history of society then really, there’s not a lot of hope for a planet in serious climate change peril. Which is due *directly* to rapacious profiteering in the capitalist economy that most of the world has been held prisoner under. We have no chance of turning back this massive tide if we don’t first acknowledge that we all come from the same place, and tell the stories that unify instead of separate us.

Someone asked an interesting question yesterday during the Kolm Toibin reading about how he goes about writing conversations with accents (he is Irish and the question was about brogue). His answer was that he doesn’t get hung up on it (spelling out how words are pronounced) and that it often becomes a distraction for the writer and the reader. In his head Irish brogue and “American” English are interwoven- or something like that…

Coptics are a good bit different from other Christians. My wife and I lived in Maspeth through the pandemic (not far from Ridgewood/Bushwick/East Williamsburg, but a world away culturally) and the bodega closest to our house was run by a Coptic Christian family.

I grew up very staunchly Christian, Baptist/Evangelical. Left the faith around age 17, and now (28 years later) I find mainline Christianity to be... triggering.

We were on Nurge Ave, a little street in a tiny neighborhood with itty-bitty two-story houses and narrow, narrow streets. Weird and kind of ugly little area, somehow industrial despite being mostly residential, concrete everywhere. We might not have left, except our apartment was tiny and the building was in horrible condition. Now we live in Kensington, with almost twice as much space and a much nicer walkable community.

Vic Broughton eloquently describes the appeal of gospel music: “Gospel digs deeper than other music. Gospel is altogether more extreme in its depths and in its heights ... always at its best when at its most emotive and cathartic . . . For an outsider coming upon the dramatic fervor of gospel unprepared, the disturbance can be utterly overwhelming. Repellent even. ‘There's something about the gospel blues,’ said Sister Rosetta Tharpe to author Tony Heilbut, ‘that's so deep the world can't stand it.’”

Zinn, Powerlands Doc sounds like an uplifting connective piece against Big Tech & Media’s highly profitable fear-filled isolating world.
I appreciate director is of Navajo community that was also exploited by the Company that’s displacing & destroying communities in the doc Vs. an outsider with “good intentions” who dips in to make a film and “be a voice for the voiceless “ or some other antiquated unchecked colonist type nonsense.

The young woman Navajo director was there and spoke afterward. She’s a lovely, radiant and cogent activist. Said she didn’t like the term decolonize and preferred instead something like re-indiginate or something.
Powerful force she is.
Really wonderful film. In which like you said the people of those various communities told their stories in their own words.
