Favoriting Acid Jazz Hands with Bronwyn Bishop: Playlist from April 14, 2023 Favoriting

Bronwyn Bishop's avatar View Bronwyn Bishop's profile Favoriting

Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Schmigadoon / Schmicago is still delightful.

I tuned in just in time to hear Bronwyn admonish that she was not, NOT, recommending this movie!! But not in time to hear what movie it was.

congrats on getting tickets! I'm very happy for our heroine

To hear this show, I turned off an episode of The Front (?? NY Times radio feature) covering the closing of Phantom. It actually sounded interesting (the promo and first two minutes).

I saw the earlier seasons of Schmigadoon, haven't caught up with the 3rd season yet (did like the 1st 2)

Saw a really well produced version of this (Hunchback) at a regional theater in Westchester (RebeccaJazz was in it). It's a dark show, but I really liked it.

I get a few Times Podcasts, but not The Front. Have to check it out!

I missed the title, too, but I think she was talking about Beau Is Afraid, based on the cast

↳ Notes on Tommy's Holiday Camp @7:21
Yes, but from what I read, Beau is Afraid isn't out until 4/21. Special screening? And why the huge screen, sitting at the very front?
Avatar 7:23pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Yep Beau Is Afraid. I did like it but don't want to explicitly recommend it because it is three hours of weirdness lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm

I have a few "concept albums" that never were staged, but perhaps shouldn't be.

I didn't realize it wasn't officially out yet lol. That must be why our tix were $29 each. We were close to the front, it was the IMAX at Lincoln Square

Just quoting what I read on the internet, which does have tenuous relationship with real life.
  7:29pm
Notes on Tommy's Holiday Camp:

The Story of Simon Simopath seems ripe for the picking, as far as staging concept albums goes. Guaranteed press buzz based on the band name alone
Avatar 7:32pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

By the original Nirvana! You could trick Gen-X'rs into coming by advertising it as a Nirvana Musical
  7:36pm
Notes on Tommy's Holiday Camp:

↳ Bronwyn Bishop @7:32
Exactly! And on top of that you'd get the overlap between obscure pop culture oddities nerds and people who like musicals--there are at least several dozen of us out there
Avatar 🎭 7:36pm
Listener Gregory:

Last night on Colbert, as surprisingly articulate Nick Cage said that he would like to play the part of Pontius Pilate in JC Superstar. It's his favorite musical, and he thinks that part is the only one he could sing.

Yes, please! Can some producer make that happen already???
  7:51pm
Notes on Tommy's Holiday Camp:

↳ Song: "Light at the End of the Tunnel" by "Richie Havens"
What's with that 70s/80s style of backlit-looking animation and illustration where everything is bright outlines on a black background? Was it some attempt to emulate early computer graphics? Is that what the world looks like when you're in some sort of coke-fueled fugue state? It's such an alienating aesthetic

Thought you said "Nick Cave" at first! (must be the context). But now "surprisingly articulate" makes a little more sense.

Green Day, no, please. I was shocked to learn that a friend of mine from S. Cal. came to Berkeley to attend American Idiot at Berkeley Rep. My reply, "Really?!" Don't/won't/can't get the attraction to that band (but then I have a similar disposition toward Nirvana). Head scratch.
