Nachum Segal's JM in the AM wasn't freeform, it was a show for the Orthodox Jewish community that kinda operated separately from the rest of the station and did its own thing, and NS made a lot of friends. I think maybe one of the former NYC mayors pledged some money too (?) but my memory sucks.

I like serial TV a lot, *but* the writers need to be allowed to throw in some stand-alone episodes too, in case their story arc is stretched too thin. Also, the writers need a chance to practice on single episodes first and build up their skills. Story arcs are much harder to pull off, as the incompetence and incoherence of The X-Files’ and Lost’s “mythology” proved.

One of my faves that skillfully mixes stand-alones and story arcs is the obscure Farscape (1999-2003), a Jim Henson Co. product that features mostly live action people, but also a greedy, devious, scheming, backstabbing alien muppet.
