The songs are mainly a collection of sub-personalities, I think, or maybe playing cards. The Shuffle Man is a conjurer; the Scorpio is a TV detective; the Feathery Serpent God is a Mexican deity that brings power and fertility; the Midnight Tram is destiny; Socrates is wisdom and rebellion. On Side 2, Noirer Than Noir is trying to escape; The Man Who Loves The Rain is me as I present in life; The Sir Tommy Shovell is an English patriarch; The Raging Muse is my subconscious, and the female warrior inside it; One Day (It’s Being Scheduled) is a summary of the world I’m in.

Someone I expected to look like they were born 50 was Warren Oates. Found some pictures of him as a younger man, not baby-faced, but definitely had a youthful look. Then, it's like he weathered into classic Oates pretty quickly.

There is no such things as a “permanent”
phonograph needle!
Unfortunately, the public has taken the over-
statements of some enterprising manufacturers
too literally, with the result that countless re-
cordings have been, and continue to be, needlessly
ruined. Microgroove records require precise nee-
dles in good condition for not only best results
at the speaker, but minimum record and needle
wear.
Three types of needles are in general use; those
with a 1-mil point, a 2-mil point, and 3-mil point.
Microgroove records have grooves designed to
accommodate the 1-mil point needle only! Stand-
ard (78 rpm) discs are grooved to accept the 3-
mil point needle. Unfortunately, a 2-mill point
needle (misnamed “universal’) is furnished on
many phonographs with a view of playing all
record grooves and speeds interchangeably. . .
which after a fashion it does. But it is too large
to fill or seat correctly microgroove grooves, and
too small to properly fit standard grooves; with
the result that in both cases maximum quality of
sound is not obtainable. In addition, excessive
wear to both type of groove is induced. Many
owners have been victims of this sad mistake
through failure to appreciate and understand
the true facts of the matter.
For best results and minimum record wear, use
only a needle that is specifically designed to fit
the grooving of your records. In short, a 3-mil
needle only should be used on standard records,
and a 1-mil needle only on microgroove discs.
