Dean:

I've just never given a shit about my birthdays. Why should I? The whole business is such a weird ritual, somehow acceptable to people who otherwise disdain ritual. It's fun to think, "I was born on this day 64 years ago"--that's where I'm heading--but why is it a social affair? Who cares?

Happy Birthday, though, really.

i haven't done anything since my 40th, and usually only did so every other year before then, but, it's just an excuse to do something, a dinner, have a bunch of free jazz musicans/rock bands play at your apt..... (or when i was even younger, some djs for all-night parties).

I have two young kids, and so of course I have this burdensome obligation to celebrate their birthdays in a public way. One year I refused to do the jumpy-house/kids gym approach, which inevitably meant driving miles outside of town. I invited everybody to a local pizza and beer joint, hired a magician, and let everybody chill. One parent thanked me for making the gathering enjoyable to everybody. Parents thanked me for the gesture.

I moved in as soon as it was built in 2003, and there was no one around for two blocks, so, I got a good deal. (two stories, backyard, brand new, huge basement, 3 beds/2.5 baths, huge kitchen/living room. Of course, by 2010, the place had filled in and the rent was redonk, so, we left billy burg for the wick...

I did the same, of course, but my tactic has been to follow the itineraries of great musical groups. I have no particular desire to see any other parts of the world. They're the world. I live in the world. I don't need to see every corner of the world. Nor do I need to experience sites of genocide. I wake up every day conscious of the sheer horror of this world. I have no interest in substantiating my disgust.

And fuck, yeah, a turntable upgrade is revelatory and a cause for celebration!
