I recall Warwick saying something about Burt's instruction/direction/expectation. She was supposed to place her voice like an instrument note, with emphasis on precision and clarity, not flourishes or anything that would take her off the intended path and placement his composition and ear wanted.

wfmu.org...

On yesterday Krys O show she played audio from a BBC Bacharach special in 1970 that included Bacharach rehearsing a new song with Warwick that I found instructive. There was segment also of them reminiscing at the piano and doing a medley. He asks if she remembers a song that was among the initial demo's that he paid her 12.50 each for. She said she can't remember any song she was paid only 12.50 for. I don't know if the whole special can be found online, haven't looked.

Name of the group: George.
Review: Very good.
I thought the live show was significantly better than the album, which is recorded in a kind of compressed way. Live, the different voices were clearer and were also improvising very freely. Anna Webber was the main (excellent) soloist, but Aurora Nealand was maybe the MVP, with extended vocals, keyboard, soprano and alto saxes. If you get a chance to hear the group live, I would recommend them.

Some time ago I read Burt Bacharach's memoir. I loved the first part when things were scrappy and hard won. The part when he was a platinum legend - not so much. That's just me, Bentley's, cashmere sweaters and Hollywood horseshit leave me cold.

I had a girlfriend who's sister was a linguist. She was married to a Japanese man. One day my my girlfriend asked him how good her sisters Japanese was. "She speaks like a five year old" Conversely, his English was not that great. One day my girlfriend was wearing a red vintage sun dress with a row of white buttons down the back. He pointed at the one over the crack of ass and said "fot button"

I always try to rationalize - I had to speak English like a five year old first too ...but I'm never going to advance to fluency in any other language. To just say it out loud. The flipside is - whatever you learn, you'll be glad you did. Especially if you go where it's not about English...

Ah, thank you! Interesting, from Johnson's page: "My dissertation research, Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage, considers the engagement between jazz and American radio. Both jazz and radio are social constructs that reflect underlying ideological discourses operating within the contexts of larger societal constraints. The term jazz is, and has always been, an unstable signifier that refers to a wide range of music and one that allows this music to be ideologically positioned with respect to aesthetics, politics, race, class, and gender. Radio is also a complex social entity that often uses artistic products to attract audiences, which can be sold to advertisers or directly appealed to for financial support. This topic has not been the subject of comprehensive study, so my research takes a broad approach and examines the current jazz radio environment, two historical periods, and prospects for jazz in the emerging “new media.”" Relevant!

Yep, more than a handful of references to WKCR.

My proud scholarship moment: I'm at the now defunct University Press Books in Berkeley waiting to meet up with a friend, where I note a new title from Duke University Press, a collection of contributions about music and improvisation. I scan the table of contents and then the bibliographic references, where I find listed a paper I wrote years before in law school! A professor of music at Cambridge U. used my paper, albeit critically, in his contribution!

When I worked in a public library we maintained several shelves' worth of phone books from around the country and the world. A lot of work keeping them up.

Somebody maintains scans of old phone books online--maybe it's archive.org. I found the entry for the house in San Diego where my parents and I lived when I was born. The entry was under my mom's name.
