Many seem unaware, though hinted in the movie, Col Tom was born Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk, and immigrated illegally to the US when he was 20 (1929). He had an odd accent, but more southern sprinkled with Dutch inflection. Hanks went mad with the method acting. youtu.be... I detest Luhrmann's style, the outre visual assault of present day culture in historic settings is nauseating. I agree it was least egregious in Elvis.

Oscar I'm jealous of both you're perception & succinct articulation. To Review a Review... Also - I admire a Critic not making some Pronouncement about a Work & admitting plain ambivalence - tho that's predicated by the Film in this case apparently, it's still refreshing...

When you have time my diatribe has a link to an interview he did with Ted Koppel, around the age he was in the film. I thought making him the protagonist, while a brave choice, greatly reduced what we could've learned about Elvis as a person.
Avatar 4:17pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The Made for TV Elvis miniseries from 2005 I found surprisingly good, accurate (as if I knew) - & more moving than I wanted to admit. Then - LisaMarie immediately passes. I mean - it communicates the basics of his Momma-Lovin' background - getting on Pills in the Army when she died - his galvanizing talent - & his Faustian bond with the Colonel. Which are the essentials.

Hey Olivia, hey all! I thought I would try "Elvis" after Olivia said she liked it and Creamo said he hated it @). but then I was reminded that Tom Hanks plays Col Tom and when the movie first came out and I heard that (TH doing a southern accent)--I was like, no way.

Then, one of my bro's told me he wouldn't see it cuz of: "Tom Hanks in a fat suit"

So, I'm never going to watch it @)
