Sorry, MFS. I meant MFS.

Here's my go-to example. Was haunting the marvelous, alas now departed Analog Room in San Jose. A guy strolls in with a moderately beat-up copy of Close to the Edge. Brian Hartsell, the proprietor, examined the matrix and determined that it was an early pressing. He played it on damn fine gear. He then played his store copy of MFS's remaster. It was glorious in its own way, but it lacked edge or oomph. (No audiophile nerd here, though I love the gear. Words can only do so much.) I hear a similar difference between my plain old Pink Floyd Meddle CD and the MFS redo, but in this case I prefer the MFS, no doubt due to compression issues with old CD mastering.

By "house" sound, I didn't mean the electronic music genre. I meant house sound, like a house style for a magazine. There's a quality to MFS records not unlike ECM's. On many occasions it can be pleasing, but sometimes it seems overdone. The result is etiolated music.

true, Rabbit, true. mastered for the delivery system; but a lot going on. because of all the people of limited musical talent in the late 70s, onward making hits mostly with synthesizers, there is no actual bass guitar in most top 40 music since then...or anything that reasonably simulates one.
...so, mastered for subwoofers, not for a solid bass.

As for me, I agree that modern masters have gotten too compressed sounding, but older recordings seem to have gotten the proper "space" with fewer tracks - maybe a "simplification" or mixing down of tracks, but not as loud could make a good balance.

Have to think about that relative to Boston (I'm in North NewEngland.) Always think the Darwin~Galapagos analogy is useful for Music Scenes. Needs to be isolated from others enuff something distinct can evolve, but also large enuff to be self-sustaining. (Liverpool, Texas, Seattle & so on.) My SACD is stereo only. No 5.1 for me.

Nice to note in the comment by RR at 5:31: ↳ Song: "Hardly Hamster™" by "Gus Bodenheim" Mr. Bodenheim's delivery is so mellifluous, it can officially be considered a song.

Yeah, that's definitely a plausible opinion (and one held by many.

Sampling at 96k should do a fine job of handling the raw frequency response people usually find that human ears can register, certainly at least with hearing tests which involve the ability to discern or not steady state sines at various frequencies.

But... there's strong evidence that the human hearing apparatus was evolved to be immensely sensitive to tiny timing / phase variations, as part of the ability to detect where a suspicious possibly-dangerous little noise might be coming from. And perhaps some improved ability to encode really subtle timing relationships might be why some listeners have preferred really high-sampling-rate recordings, even though those formats seem to use a wasteful number of bits relative to understood needs for high frequency reproduction...

It's always important to trust (well designed and executed) listening tests over theory, because often people's applications of theory include simplifying assumptions which don't match aspects of the real world use case or limitations of the equipment as implemented...

A typical hybrid SACD player will play the CD layer on a unit not equipped for CD playback. Might have to grab one.

"digitizing" much of my vinyl before departing with it, ripping using complete shit itunes, because it's my only option on my complete shit whackbook - only reasonable option to a wave file; then converting to flac files. converting to 44100 sample rate based on the cd standard. would i be better off with a higher sample rate?

Try the same track at two different sample rates and A/B them. I'm rarely able to tell the difference, but of course that may be due to equipment, acoustics, bias, etc...

1. I make sure whatever I'm going to digitize is clean.
2. Make sure the pitch is correct.

I use an old Cardbus EMU 1616m that has a RIAA phono preamp and grounding lug.

I use 24bit 48000 for most everything I record these days. Bands multi track live. Records stereo 24bit 48000. I record into Sonic Foundry Sound Forge. concert to MP3s later using LAME with VBR q=0...

you can use Audacity for stereo WAV files too
