Joe, I posted something about this on JA's show earlier, but if you haven't heard the story I'll bet you'll get a kick out of it. Here's Billy Gibbons talking about touring with Hendrix: “He was always practicing. Always curious about the next unusual twist. He was fascinated by Jeff Beck’s playing. I have vivid recollections of tip-toeing into Hendrix’s hotel room, and he always had a record player, a giant piece of furniture, in his room. He said: ‘Man, how do you think Jeff Beck is doing this?’ And I said: ‘Well, I can probably imagine Jeff Beck is scratching his head wondering the same about you.’” www.loudersound.com...

from wiki: McCarty claims that Relf was the first to use the name; he may have gotten it from Jack Kerouac's novel On the Road, where it referred to rail yard hobos.[10] He adds that Topham identified it as a nickname for jazz saxophonist Charlie "Yardbird" Parker.

As great a song as this is, I think it was the kind of thing that frustrated Beck: he had to play that same signature lick every time on this song, and the little solo is the same on this BBC version as on the single.

Here's a great show from Fillmore West, 12/7/68. Listen to the one note at 34:49 that slides into screaming feedback. A portal into psychotic delirium! The whole show is worth a listen, even if it’s a cruddy audience recording. Try not to smile when he tears into the “Beverly Hillbillies” theme during the show:

Looking at all three of the Yardbirds' stellar guitarists, Beck has always been the most "otherworldly," as it were. What separates him is the way he used his influences to very quickly move into unexplored styles and technological directions. Unlike say, Clapton or Page, who spent a longer time harnessing and stretching direct influences and expanding "worlds," Beck was downright amazing in the way he quickly created his own new "world" of guitar playing.

Spot on. I always thought of Beck being more akin to Hendrix than the other two. Drawing on a wide array of influences - maybe hearing some Hawaiian slack key guitar and thinking, that’s good how can I adapt that? Think Wired & BlowByBlow were more relevant than this RodStewart period. Groovy as it is.

I'm amazed that there seems to be no performance film footage of the "Truth" group.
At least Ron Wood's previous group, the Birds, appeared in "The Deadly Bees".

That stuff is fantastic, and a prime example of what a monstrous player he was. I'll say it again, best of his generation of countrymen.

Clapton & Green in Blues - but when Clapton got an Award for Best Overall Guitarist - he said - I think you meant this for Jeff.
