It is quite unclear, Chresti! Bird feeder seems possible. SBP's suggestion seems viable as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm

yes i think that's it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm

maybe it's a big high-heeled shoe-shaped bird feeder

I've never actually gone that deep on Built to Spill myself, zzz. But I've loved that specific track since I first heard it at my old college radio station.

How were Death Cab live, Chresti?

listened to a lot of the modest mouse album with ‘float on’ around the time it came out. loved it! haven’t really listened back to it since or really any other modest mouse
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Sam Segal:

Float On was my gateway into Modest Mouse. I still love that song. I wonder how it would play at karaoke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
coelacanth∅:

i always said modest mouse is okay but you only need one of their albums. any one will do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
Sam Segal:

If I had to pick one Modest Mouse album, it would be "The Lonesome Crowded West," which I believe they're playing in full on tour right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm

i was with someone who had 4 modest mouse albums on cassette (1 album/side -"bootleg") and i think we listened to that one the most.

Wow! I also crossed paths with Isaac Brock once, although not to the extent that you did. I once drove him from his hotel to a gig. He vaped in the back of the van, and we had some stilted conversation about how much I love "The Lonesome Crowded West."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Sam Segal:

Can't imagine how good this would sound blasting out of a blown out car speaker
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
coelacanth∅:

yes, "not a fan" is one way to put it!
i consider it a disease in african contemporary music! i did an extensive african music playlist (over 5000 songs) and very little new music because most of it either has autotune, it's cheesy american-style music, or it rap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
coelacanth∅:

("very little" being relative)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Sam Segal:

None other than Flea on bass on this track. None other than Robert Fripp on guitar!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Sam Segal:

@Coel, there may be one other track in this set that deploys auto-tune. I'll try to provide fair warning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
coelacanth∅:

early rai didn't have studio vocal trickery. the singers actually sang those intricate melismatic parts; but now it's usually done with electronics. it's a shame in my opinion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
coelacanth∅:

haha,Thanks Sam!
i like this one a lot!

@coel: what does radiotelevione italiana have to do w/ pop music forms of algiers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm

I think there's a touch of auto-tune on this one.

@coel: radiotelevisione italiana is abbreviated as RAI (for tv, radio, and the record label)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Sam Segal:

Oh dear. I undersold the amount of auto-tune in this set, Coel. I think I may have even sought out the tunes with auto-tune, now that I think about it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
doctorjazz:

Is that funny electronic sound intermittently in the vocals autotune? It's bizarre...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Sam Segal:

That is exactly what the auto-tune is, Doc.
  11:01pm
rw:

Normally I'm not a fan, but I like how far they're pushing it.
  11:02pm
rw:

It took me some time to appreciate the kind of cheeze they're pedaling here too.
Avatar 11:03pm
northguineahills:

of course, auto-tune was originally invented to measure pitch. then to slightly 'correct' pitches of instrumental then vocal recordings in post production. it only was just after the turn of the millenia that it was used purposefully to an singular effect unto itself, as most of us are accustomed to r&b, later hiphop, and now international musics...
Avatar 11:04pm
still b/p:

Pedaling the Raicycle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
coelacanth∅:

i do appreciate it when it's used as an instrument, as opposed to a crutch for people who cannot sing -or dumbass record companies who foolishly decided along the way that "perfect" is better, so they force it on perfectly good singers. (though in any usage i consider it dehumanizing and it grates on my nerves heavily and immediately)
Avatar 11:08pm
northguineahills:

don't forget the title, "chebi" (which i believe is the same as cheb)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Sam Segal:

Ah yes, Chebi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
coelacanth∅:

i think it grew in usage mainly because record companies saw it as a tool to save them money... considerably fewer vocal takes -just sing it shitty and fix it with autotune.
but yeah now people have embraced it.
which makes me sad (because of the dehumanizing)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
coelacanth∅:

Avatar 11:13pm
northguineahills:

coel and Rev Rabbit confirmed as the same person... ;p
Avatar 11:13pm
still b/p:

I may have missed it elsewhere, but Cher's "Believe" was where I, and I believe a lotta other folks, first noted the aututune effect used in the manner that went on to such overkill thereafter. It was at least used with some discrimination in the song -- just a dash of it. (Footnote: "she became the oldest female artist ever to have the no. 1 song on the Billboard chart, a distinction she still holds 20 years later.")
  11:15pm
Dean:

I don't think it is per se dehumanizing. I love it as an instrument, albeit one not always elegantly wielded. I'm not sure what it means for a musical instrument to "dehumanize" anything.

Zapp's "More Bounce to the Ounce" was way before Cher.

Avatar 11:17pm

@Dean: i concur. then again, many instruments in many contexts are not used 'elegantly', at least w/ artistic intent. (whatever that is)

when Cher used it it was an effect. intentionally up front, not trying to hide it.
and we all knew Cher could sing it fine without help.
i don't much like that song but i have no problem with the autotune part of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm

I'm having canned tomato soup to which I added potato, broccoli and lots of garlic plus some dried oregano and a Nepali red chile, garlic and Sichuan pepper mix.

I am in the camp of preferring less auto-tune. I got a couple of RAI cd box sets about 15 years ago. I need to find them and get up to speed on the genre.
