A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

On the subject of earplugs: there was a bit of "hipsterism" to it, when I first started going to shows. I recall, playing in crummy little bands, in tiny garages, with our gear at maximum volume, then complaining that we couldn't hear each other after the practice session.

I remember when you would get ear plugs at the bar, people used to look at your funny. What a dumb thing to be "too cool" about.
  9:26pm
Heather:

↳ Austin Rich @9:24
I remember the hipsterism well! "Oo, lookit fancy you, trying to protect your hearing!" So silly and pointless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm

Like Kate Fagan, I don't wanna be too cool. Especially since I made it to 62 with my hearing pretty much intact and no lasting tinnitus.

When everyone - both on and off stage - is wearing ear plugs, maybe we should turn the volume down a bit?

Austin Rich:

I should return to the well of this record. It was one of the best thrift scores I found in the last several years. Just full of great samples.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm
Kat in Chicago:

Club music has to have some volume so you can feel the bass in your body. I've experienced more discomfort at high frequencies and with poorly tuned speakers.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
Austin Rich:

Pre-pandemic, I would play a lot of noise shows where I would be on the other end of the spectrum, playing a lot of samples of nature and narration and things that don't always sound great at high volume. It's sometimes a negotiation with the sound guy, if you're on a bill with a bunch of Harsh Noise dudes.

Loud is great it's appropriate. But not always.

I pulled it up on Bandcamp and that's what it says

Kat - I’ll be tuning in as well.

For those interested, Arvo Zylo released Radio Feedback earlier this year on his No Part Of It Label. The digital version includes two 59 minute long tracks that are from his show on WLUW. It’s interesting stuff: https://nopartofit.bandcamp.com/album/radio-feedback

Thank you, JM in Texas! I think my show next week is going to be radio-themed and what better to include than some Arvo!

I do love Radio About Radio. It feels like the radio is listening to itself.

Finally saw the Swans after years and years of hearing about them. In 2010, on that sort of "reunion" tour they did. (But with new material, and a new album.) It was everything people has said it would be. Just over the top and excellent.

JM in Texas:

Kat - No Part Of It is such a fantastic label, already has a ton of stuff lined up for 2023. Daydream Bereaver is one of my favorites (drone) from this past year.

I saw Swans twice, once on Children of God tour, then at Big Ears in Knoxville a few years back. Powerful.
