I learned about WFMU by accident. It was Morris County NJ 1986 and I was 12 years old, bored by commercial radio. One night I was flipping around the dial and heard someone playing Zappa’s “Billy the Mountain.” I was mesmerized. You mean there are other weirdos out there? Something different from this suburban assembly line? Nightmare Lounge. Vanilla Bean. Dave the Spazz. Sister Krys. Wild Girl. Bronwyn C. Pat Duncan. Then a short while later I was visiting NYC w a friend and we stopped in See/Hear and there was a stack of LCDs (FMU’s old program guide / zine). I grabbed one and kept reading & listening. Short version: I visited NYC for the first time in summer of 1985 and enjoyed WKCR and WFMU. Moved to NYC in 92 and was an infrequent listener. Got broadband at home in 99 and was irregular visitor to wfmu.org in early zips, bought some CDs from Irwin and started exploring via the Otis Fodder curated 365 project. ubu.com...

Basically an occasional listener this century.

My full on WFMU habit (addiction) came when I finally got a personal smart phone about 5 years ago.

Now one or more WFMU streams are playing here during all my waking (and some of my sleeping) hours.

When I was in high school, living in Allamuchy, I discovered WNTI (Centenary College in Hackettstown). What! Radio can be like this?! Ever since then I've been radio restless whenever I'm in a car. So of course I discovered WFMU at some point lat is high school. When I moved to Vermont I sort of forgot about FMU (but did have my own show for several years up here). But then someway I remembered after the internet was a thing. I started listening to archives of Downtown Soulville and then quickly expanded. FMU is most of what I listen to, rarely Oulville anymore tho. Go figure.

Oh yeah! The 365 Days Project! That also repeatedly drew me towards WFMU, and Irwin's projects!
I long dreamt of adding some of my own crate digging finds to 365 project but it soon ended.

Enjoying the origin stories today Vicky & family.

My primary connection came in 1986 after being a KCRW freak for a few years. Straight to the left of the dial for me and the primary hook was Lou D’Antonio.

And the Bean and Irwin etc etc et al.

Thanks for the good vibes.

There were two 356 days projects , 2003 and 2007. And if you can't get enough of that material, the Beware Of The Blog blog.wfmu.org had 365 Days outtakes and extras, as well as huge amounts of uncategorizable audio material.

Late 2002, leafing through a TV guide in a dentist's waiting room. I found a mention of WFMU. I was quickly hooked (and I don't even have a TV, must have been fate)

Always check for zeppelins. It’s not a good alternate universe unless the skies are full of zeppelins. Otherwise it’s not worth knowing the difference.

Was disappointed in my college radio station in north NJ in the mid-90s, wanted more standard indie rock, found WPRB but they didn’t play indie on weekends, had to listen to Dave Mandl’s show on FMU on Saturdays instead, slowly got addicted to the weirdness

Been listening since 83 - Just lucky to be entering college at that age and checking out the left side of the dial WNYU had the New Afternoon show, but I alsways seemed to gravitate to 91.1 The hardcore show w/ Pat Duncan, the Hound and Maybe Irwin Chusid playing this weird Romani song are my earliest memories of this wild and great station.

Fred is French, so presumably it was a snooty French TV guide full of references to Mapplethorpe, contemporary dance, upside down cake, and random weird American stuff like WFMU. Or at least that’s what I imagine you’d find in a French TV guide.
