Years back, our good friends who lived across the street called us around 1 AM, waking us up. They were on their rood and hearing explosions and were convinced NYC or at least north Brooklyn was under some sort of attack or other doomsday scenario. I went out back and could hear sort of muffled whumps. Disturbing but not quite sound-the-doomsday-siren disturbing. It took me about three minutes to call 311 and end up on the line with someone at the closest power plant who assured me they were literally blowing off steam from the system. I called our friends back to let them know, and they met this with what struck me as an exaggerated level of dubiety.

It wasn't until the next day that I thought to ask just how high they were during all of this. Confirmation of "extremely."

When we finally got a turntable hooked up last year (bought from Fabio after trying to resurrect our old one for several months), I picked up an original pressing of Small Change from the record store around the corner. That was one of the first albums I ever heard that blew my perception of music open and liberated me to start finding stuff I liked (that and Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash lent to me by a HS teacher). I have been listening to it for over thirty years, and hearing it with surface noise was just perfect. I was in tears pretty much the entire album.

I've always been a little sad that I wasn't traveling this nation's highway and byways until after the Burma Shave era.

The replacement I grew up reading (clearly influenced by the classic Burma Shave campaign) is those South of the Border billboards. Do they even still exist?

I'm always put in mind of the plaques that used to be on the ceiling rafters of the tunnel between the Times Square and Port Authority subway stations. What was it?

Late for work
So tired
If late
Get fired
What's the point?
Why pretend?
Go back to bed
Do it again

Something like that. Always felt it was surprisingly chilling and honest about the pointlessness of wage work for a public space! I don't think they are there anymore.

@Yetz: Ha!

Back in the early 1990s, when a co-worker whose last name was Meth (for real!) announced that he and his wife were expecting a child, I lobbied hard for them to call her Crystal if a girl.

Somehow the name of the drug mustn't have been as much on everyone's lips as it is now, because he showed no sign of getting what I was up to.
