Whole fascinating thing how it's not exactly true that Rawk'n'Roll was born in one specific moment when Blues & Country collided on a street crossing in Memphis in 1954 or something... They say in Texas - no one cared what kinda Music it was if yer could dance to it...

RRN63: Absolutely. Interesting history to pin down, but at a point, it was more organic than is easy to explain. Like mold, perhaps. Rock 'n Mold, baby!

The Punk tranferrance has definable roots in NYC, Detroit/AnnArbor, and Cleveland/Akron. It gets messy quickly.
  10:15pm
Wyatt:

Any book recs on the Cleveland-Akron rock/punk scenes?
Avatar 10:15pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

To me - Punk was practically born with Garage in the 60s - which had roots in FratRawk & the 1950s even... So maybe it was born in the Northwest !
But the truth is probly stranger : Things happen different places @ once because it's Time.

I find this Program to be FarOut - in the good old sense. That Freak sense of being allowed to be FarOut. Actually intimidating in terms of my ignorance - but that's FMU & why we're here. But let's credit the Hippies with positing a culture in which having one's mind blown was not just positive but fundamental ...without even - & here's something truly of a remote era - judgements about it. & that *is* comforting. & just the idea of a Culture implies Continuity - & Community. Which perhaps everything else aims to disrupt. This Program has some of that about it...

I think of Music Scenes as being quite Darwinian ...you need isolation to be distinct - but also to be strong enuff to thrive in those conditions. Galapagos & Liverpool.
