Ooh, looking forward to this episode. I really delved deep into African music in the '90s, and saw most of the greats when they came thru town, some of whom have since left us.

Katherine Sage:

perhaps some ghosts are still around from last night
Avatar 12:12pm
Katherine Sage:

and hell yeah Fab! there's a lot here for you to sink your teeth into
Avatar 12:14pm
Mr Fab:

I confess that I lost track of what's been happening in contemporary African music. Probably just lots of hip-hop, like everywhere else...
Avatar 12:15pm
Katherine Sage:

yeah none of this is "contemporary." it leans heavily into the 70's. the Awesome Tapes from Africa label sometimes puts out music from current artists
Avatar 12:28pm
Katherine Sage:

bands like Vampire Weekend wouldn't exist without music like this

It's weird to hear bands like King Gizzard incorporating Saharan guitar sound into their music.
Avatar 12:36pm
Katherine Sage:

it's cool how Stu actually had one of his guitars modified with microtonal frets to actually play the notes required

MHLee:

I've been listening to blues revolution a lot recently
Avatar 12:40pm
Katherine Sage:

this one's almost 10 minutes long so settle in
Avatar 12:47pm
Mr Fab:

it's great if you can find Nigerian juju records where they go on as long as they want. I have one (Ebenezer Obey maybe?) with only three tracks. It's awesome.
Avatar 12:48pm
Katherine Sage:

Fela Kuti was known for having albums with two songs on them, each song 30-ish minutes long
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I believe I have one with just one song that fades out on side one and fades in on the flip side.
  12:51pm
MHLee:

The sounds right. A lot of African songs are built around a rift that goes on and on. They never seem to drag though.
Avatar 12:51pm
Katherine Sage:

even better
Avatar 12:52pm
Katherine Sage:

also don't mind me completely screwing up backannouncing. i pre-record them monday night after work and i must've been especially tired last night
  12:53pm
MHLee:

It's okay. I lost a back announcement last week. No idea how.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
Jan Turkenburg:

just checked, it's a double album with two songs. one 26 the other 31 minutes in total
Avatar 12:54pm
Katherine Sage:

i usually blame the ADHD gremlins for stuff like that
Avatar 12:54pm
Katherine Sage:

they're always stealing stuff and making me forget stuff
Avatar 12:55pm
Mr Fab:

Afro-tastic! Thanks, Katherine
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm

wow... that went by quickly!

Thank you. Don't be surprised if I do some comments on past episodes as I catch up on archive listening. Enjoying the range that you include in your program.
