Actually, a number of Shleep's songs came from Wyatt's wife Alfrede Benge, whose poetry he is forever finding around their old wooden dacha deep in the English countryside. Thus the title cut, recorded over Alfie's mild objections, with its image of an insomniac's sheep-counting gone wrong: Each sheep, where it landed refusing to exit, remained. (Creating a vast writhing heap growing fast on the left). "I couldn 't waste that, could I?" laughs Wyatt. "She thought it was a bit trivial, but it just made me laugh, and it made Brian Eno laugh, too. So we did it anyway. You know, she writes these things and then I find them and then that's what happens. When you're in the same house with somebody, you can't hide everything.
	9:05pm Krys O.: I've been an insomniac since I was a little kid. I was also a sleep walker and had night terrors. Mom would often say, "Do you remember what you did last night?"

	👻 9:11pm Austin Rich: I do love making radio. I used to make tapes where I would pretend I was a DJ, with my brothers. We would just record songs off the radio for our songs, and I would steal jokes from all the DJs I liked. I wish even ONE of those tapes had survived. I think about tracking them down again all the time.

	👻 9:13pm Austin Rich: Onomatopoeia was a big deal in Eugene OR in the '90's, a mix of music like this, odd industrial jams, psychedelic jams, etc. They had a little bit of a Psychic TV going for them, and the gents in this group STILL make music now. But when I started doing MVM in Salem, they sent me a nice care package.

	👻 9:15pm Austin Rich: In general, I wish people would just send me strange tapes. But I will do something with any old tapes I find of me pretending to be a DJ, you can count on that. (Though I was really into Grunge and the current radio hits of the late 80's / early 90's, so it would be a lot of that music.)

	👻 9:17pm Austin Rich: We should have a week here at Sheena where we all play recordings of our OLDEST radio broadcasts. I think that would be pretty entertaining.
	👻 9:19pm Austin Rich: All of the "sleep" samples in this show were things I found, and mixed into the "Tom Furgas" track, as well as this track. The samples pop up throughout the show. I mixed the music, and the samples, for this show, live, so it contains all the "looseness" of not exactly knowing how this would all come together.
	👻 9:20pm Austin Rich: I played a show with Hypnagogue, and got this tape from them. However, the tape itself is not labeled, so I'm not entirely sure which side is which. I THINK I have it right...
	9:20pm Mr Fab: Alas, I don’t think anything exists of my earliest radio escapades. I never bothered to record them. To me, radio was an of-the-moment thing. Probably the earliest I could go is when I would sometimes cohost Spacebrother Greg’s old show. But even that’s only like from the last 10-15 years.

And now the one next door is on fire. I think that one was abandoned too… pretty sure nobody was in there(apart from possibly an arsonist)

	👻 9:30pm Austin Rich: Dylan Houser is out of Florida, and consistently releases some of the most interesting music by a current artist. I've done a split record with Dylan, and we've worked together a few times. Their stuff ranges from guitar explorations like this, to harsh noise, and everything in-between.

	👻 9:58pm Austin Rich: Never been to NY, so I don't really know the pizza out there. But we have a local place that we like, called, "Escape From NY Pizza," and I assume that's as close to that as we have in the Mid-Valley.

	10:00pm coelacanth∅: Aitch the water might make a difference. it definitely does with the bagles. my nephew has made bagels several times in just the same way, with nyc water and with other water (stamford,connecticut; wappinger's falls; boston) and the ones using nyc water are always better.

	👻 10:01pm Austin Rich: The West Coast famously ruins pizza; we put broccoli and stuff like that on pies, for some reason. So I wouldn't be surprised if you mock our pizza options.

	👻 10:02pm Austin Rich: I live in Salem, between Portland and Eugene. The locals here say we are in "The Mid-Valley," but I've never understood what that means.

	10:13pm coelacanth∅: there used to be a place in new paltz that was open later than others on weeknights. i drove a taxi so i stopped in often but they never had any of their many toppings already made. good people they were they'd always offer to throw some broccoli onto a plain slice. not the same.
	10:13pm Mr Fab: I’m a native Californian, but California Pizza Kitchen is just about the last place I go for the divine delicious delicacy that is pizza.

	👻 10:15pm Austin Rich: Yeah. I had a roommate who used to swear by those California Pizza Kitchen things... and I never understood. To each their own. I don't suspect I've ever been to a decent deli, either, but I do like a nice spread of fancy meats and crackers and cheeses.
	👻 10:16pm Austin Rich: I played this Rodan CD because another DJ that I know was downsizing, and gave me a couple hundred of his CDs. This was in the pile, and I hadn't heard this album in years, but remember loving it.

	👻 10:18pm Austin Rich: I love Daniel Menche! I got to record him a few times in PDX, and he's always been very nice to me. His field recordings are very relaxing.
	👻 10:19pm Austin Rich: I played one show with Don Gero, before he started playing mostly as a duo, under the name Sea Moss. Just as amazing, but the solo set Don Gero did was really incredible.

	👻 10:36pm Austin Rich: Forrest Friends and I have done a number of shows together over the years, and we both got to play with Mark Hosler the year that I was touring with him. On the drive back from our show with Mark, where our sets were at 1 AM and 2 AM, respectively, we played a set where they started and I continued, blending together for a spell. (A sort of "Halloween" set.) On the way back from that show, we almost got into a car accident! It was probably the most memorable night of that tour. Good night, postconsumer!
	👻 10:37pm Austin Rich: Forrest Friends genuinely dress up in animal furry suits and play noise music for animals. It's one of the more inventive shows I've ever seen.
	👻 10:40pm Austin Rich: I just realized I know an experimental artist that is local to you, Heather. Goes by the name Steve Flato. He does a series of shows, "Signifying Something."

	10:45pm coelacanth∅: i used to go out for a dub band from rochester when they came around, giant panda gorilla dub squad. it's been a few years though.
	10:46pm Heather: I know of them, for sure, Coel! Never seen them but they're a big name in this small city!
	👻 10:50pm Austin Rich: We are finally seeing some "fall" weather here: rain and cold. But I suspect it won't even snow until next year, if it even happens. The freezing weather doesn't seem in the cards for us this year.

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. 	9:05pm WR: www.disco-robertwyatt.com... Actually, a number of Shleep's songs came from Wyatt's wife Alfrede Benge, whose poetry he is forever finding around their old wooden dacha deep in the English countryside. Thus the title cut, recorded over Alfie's mild objections, with its image of an insomniac's sheep-counting gone wrong: Each sheep, where it landed refusing to exit, remained. (Creating a vast writhing heap growing fast on the left). "I couldn 't waste that, could I?" laughs Wyatt. "She thought it was a bit trivial, but it just made me laugh, and it made Brian Eno laugh, too. So we did it anyway. You know, she writes these things and then I find them and then that's what happens. When you're in the same house with somebody, you can't hide everything.
	9:05pm Krys O.: I've been an insomniac since I was a little kid. I was also a sleep walker and had night terrors. Mom would often say, "Do you remember what you did last night?"

	👻 9:11pm Austin Rich: I do love making radio. I used to make tapes where I would pretend I was a DJ, with my brothers. We would just record songs off the radio for our songs, and I would steal jokes from all the DJs I liked. I wish even ONE of those tapes had survived. I think about tracking them down again all the time.

	👻 9:13pm Austin Rich: Onomatopoeia was a big deal in Eugene OR in the '90's, a mix of music like this, odd industrial jams, psychedelic jams, etc. They had a little bit of a Psychic TV going for them, and the gents in this group STILL make music now. But when I started doing MVM in Salem, they sent me a nice care package.

	👻 9:15pm Austin Rich: In general, I wish people would just send me strange tapes. But I will do something with any old tapes I find of me pretending to be a DJ, you can count on that. (Though I was really into Grunge and the current radio hits of the late 80's / early 90's, so it would be a lot of that music.)

	👻 9:17pm Austin Rich: We should have a week here at Sheena where we all play recordings of our OLDEST radio broadcasts. I think that would be pretty entertaining.
	👻 9:19pm Austin Rich: All of the "sleep" samples in this show were things I found, and mixed into the "Tom Furgas" track, as well as this track. The samples pop up throughout the show. I mixed the music, and the samples, for this show, live, so it contains all the "looseness" of not exactly knowing how this would all come together.
	👻 9:20pm Austin Rich: I played a show with Hypnagogue, and got this tape from them. However, the tape itself is not labeled, so I'm not entirely sure which side is which. I THINK I have it right...
	9:20pm Mr Fab: Alas, I don’t think anything exists of my earliest radio escapades. I never bothered to record them. To me, radio was an of-the-moment thing. Probably the earliest I could go is when I would sometimes cohost Spacebrother Greg’s old show. But even that’s only like from the last 10-15 years.

	👻 9:30pm Austin Rich: Dylan Houser is out of Florida, and consistently releases some of the most interesting music by a current artist. I've done a split record with Dylan, and we've worked together a few times. Their stuff ranges from guitar explorations like this, to harsh noise, and everything in-between.

	10:13pm Mr Fab: I’m a native Californian, but California Pizza Kitchen is just about the last place I go for the divine delicious delicacy that is pizza.

	👻 10:15pm Austin Rich: Yeah. I had a roommate who used to swear by those California Pizza Kitchen things... and I never understood. To each their own. I don't suspect I've ever been to a decent deli, either, but I do like a nice spread of fancy meats and crackers and cheeses.
	👻 10:16pm Austin Rich: I played this Rodan CD because another DJ that I know was downsizing, and gave me a couple hundred of his CDs. This was in the pile, and I hadn't heard this album in years, but remember loving it.

	👻 10:18pm Austin Rich: I love Daniel Menche! I got to record him a few times in PDX, and he's always been very nice to me. His field recordings are very relaxing.
	👻 10:19pm Austin Rich: I played one show with Don Gero, before he started playing mostly as a duo, under the name Sea Moss. Just as amazing, but the solo set Don Gero did was really incredible.

	👻 10:36pm Austin Rich: Forrest Friends and I have done a number of shows together over the years, and we both got to play with Mark Hosler the year that I was touring with him. On the drive back from our show with Mark, where our sets were at 1 AM and 2 AM, respectively, we played a set where they started and I continued, blending together for a spell. (A sort of "Halloween" set.) On the way back from that show, we almost got into a car accident! It was probably the most memorable night of that tour. Good night, postconsumer!
	👻 10:37pm Austin Rich: Forrest Friends genuinely dress up in animal furry suits and play noise music for animals. It's one of the more inventive shows I've ever seen.
	👻 10:40pm Austin Rich: I just realized I know an experimental artist that is local to you, Heather. Goes by the name Steve Flato. He does a series of shows, "Signifying Something."
