This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hey Hedorian! I may not change that particular fact tonight - the title track is the juice when it comes that particular LP - but I hope I play many things tonight that you've not yet heard!
Avatar 7:06pm
Flash Strap:

Roy Haynes on drums, Richard Davis on bass (I think) and Larry Coryell on guitar. Carline Ray on bell tree. Produced by Enoch Light
Avatar 7:06pm

gotta route this show through the AR4x's! SO nice!
Avatar 7:07pm
Flash Strap:

hell yeah Never please do! these are expansive sounds this evening
Avatar 7:08pm
Flash Strap:

Both of Arnie Lawrence's LPs for Enoch Light's Proj 3 label are good, but this one is basically eternal
Avatar 7:10pm
neveract:

Even the schmaltzy stuff from Enoch Light were at least impeccably produced.. but yeah.. this is forever music.
Avatar 7:11pm
Flash Strap:

the first Children of All ages record, somewhat different to what followed, features Arnie & Richard Davis & their very young sons. Also Dick Hyman on organ and Ed Shaughnessy on drums
Avatar 7:11pm
Flash Strap:

@never: love Enoch, need to finally follow up my Command special with a Project 3 special
Avatar 7:12pm
Flash Strap:

Produced by Herbie Mann here, I should add
  7:12pm
hedorian:

can vouch for the badal roy lp on the short lived adamo which released at three arnie ones. crazy it hasn't been reissued yet -- even weirder that it there's no need for one at the moment. still cheap! one of the most inspired east/west jazz albums.

Avatar 8:05pm
neveract:

I love my Electric Eclectics album!
Avatar 8:06pm
Flash Strap:

@never: i think there's probably multiple types used by him here, wouldn't be surprised if there's like both moog and baldwin... but also there's a second keyboard player so hard to say
Avatar 8:08pm
quinn:

dang
Avatar 8:09pm
Flash Strap:

we're not even halfway through! one of the longest sidelong jams i've heard I think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm

Hyman is also known in the Audiophile world, did some records for Reference Recordings (known for minimal miking, excellent sound quality).
One that I have/know...

Avatar 8:10pm

really a universe unto itself, this side. B side is something called the Dr. Suess ballet, continuing the theme of childhood
Avatar 8:11pm

@doc: i know of those but have not heard that one, will have to check it out, looks good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm

Avatar 8:13pm
Flash Strap:

@melinda: it's by Man Ray!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm
melinda:

cool!
Avatar 8:14pm
Flash Strap:

Enoch Light had a knack for getting seminal modernists to do album covers for him. Also Josef Albers on some of those minimal Command covers early on
Avatar 8:16pm
Flash Strap:

the drummer here, Luther Rix, aka Professor Leon Luther Rix, got his start in NYC happening scene outfit The Group Image; we'll hear some from them later tonight
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm

It's a cool track, have to say I hear a bit of Grateful Dead many spots (but I hear them all over).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:19pm

Bill Plummer and the Cosmic Brotherhood's cover is a good one
Avatar 8:19pm
Flash Strap:

hey that's free improvisation with jazz, rock and psychedelic elements baby
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm
Doug Schulkind:

Love that one, chresti. Funny that legendary bass player Carole Kaye was in the "brotherhood."
Avatar 8:20pm
Flash Strap:

@chresti: a classic bit of easy-listening-meets-psychsploitation from the Wrecking Crew, with Bill Goodwin on drums
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm
doctorjazz:

Bit of eletric Miles as well!
Avatar 8:21pm
Flash Strap:

@doc: big time
Avatar 8:21pm
Flash Strap:

@doug: boy was she ever though!
Avatar 8:27pm
neveract:

Dick must have a very open mind and a great sense of humor as his Trio albums from the late 1950's for MGM are pretty schmaltzy.. then there's this!
Avatar 8:28pm
Flash Strap:

@never: he's all over the place, crazy versatile! some very very cool stuff on the Fantomfingers LP that we'll hear
Avatar 8:29pm
Flash Strap:

Bob Dorough started writing for Schoolhouse Rock in I think '72 - not hard to hear shades of that here
Avatar 8:30pm
Flash Strap:

this song is one of the greatest good feelings to be set to wax if you ask me
Avatar 🥁 8:30pm

Just popping in to say I'm completely unfamiliar with all of this stuff and am thoroughly enjoying it. Thanks Evan. Some of it reminds me of Eddie Harris...
Avatar 8:31pm
Flash Strap:

Hi Jay! my incredible pleasure & I agree completely about the shades of Eddie Harris here!
Avatar 8:32pm
Flash Strap:

btw I've been thinking of reprising the Eddie Harris special show of years past to the 3-hour format, with new material
Avatar 8:32pm
Flash Strap:

back when i did it the first time we were a 2-hour show
Avatar 8:33pm
neveract:

I read that singers Dorough admired were Teagarden, Armstrong & Mama Yancey.
Avatar 8:34pm
Flash Strap:

some very Eddie-adjacent electric sax on some of Arnie's fiery work with Chico Hamilton, one of my faves being El Exigente. alas we won't have time for those tonight, but another time soon
  8:36pm
nick:

I feel like a grown up listener to this.
Avatar 8:36pm
Flash Strap:

interesting. i confess as a kid i always reacted to his voice negatively (possibly because i never liked the animation style of school house rock and thus wasn't open-minded while experiencing it) but it's a voice that's grown on me to an extent that is simply incredible. i love him so much now, mostly thanks to this and his readings of Ferlinghetti
