Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from October 25, 2022 Favoriting

austinrich's avatar View austinrich's profile Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

True story: my first girlfriend WAS the daughter of a librarian.

good evening Rich and beautiful mutants
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm
Krys O.:

My dear sister was a school librarian. She changed careers after being an elementary school teacher for about 20 years. The library in our hometown dedicated a mural in the children's library to her memory. Same sis taught me how to read when I was about three years old. She inspired me to go to the library each week. It was around the corner from our apartment. Mom trusted me to go by myself.

Fun fact: The librarian that I saw each week when I was a tiny tot was the sister in law of William Kunstler. Years later when we were in high school and Phyllis Kunstler was still the librarian at the children's room, my best friend took an after school job to work at the library.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:20pm
Austin Rich:

I loved going the the library, from as early an age as I can remember. Books were always fun, and libraries had TONS OF BOOKS.

In college, I got hooked on inter-library loan. It's the one thing that I miss the most about college.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
postconsumer:

brought home records and books about how to draw, as a kid. Watched Abbot and Costello and Laurel and Hardy films there, too. good times.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:22pm
Austin Rich:

Oh yeah! I used to love getting old movies from the library, for free. Better than the video store.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm
Krys O.:

Oh, yes. I took our records from the library too. When I was old enough to take out books from the main library, I gravitated toward biographies, especially of film actors and directors. I adored Wm. Henry Pratt. I even spent free periods in high school in the library or I'd tutor other students in the library.

as a child i read album covers/liner notes eagerly. in my early 20s i started reading every book on natural or "alternative" healing i could find.
also biology, physiology and books about specific diseases and conditions.
i also read a lot of zen philosophy and poetry, which lead me to Hermann Hesse's "sidhartha" - which turned me on once & for all to novels.

maybe... i have told people about it, but knowing they'll decide it was my imagination.
... i did invite adventure. i took a nap at the bottom of an 8' deep grave during lunch break; wrote a song in another one that had corpses on all sides, hoping for inspiration from somewhere beyond; but didn't feel anything as far as i know.
