This may be obvious, but I see a through-line from surf guitar to psychedelic rock. Is it partially the guitar effects pedals (and the drugs)?

Frank In Queens:

All the goddamn time
  4:13pm

well, rx - almost, there. for one thing there were no guitar 'pedals' when surf was in it's prime. the reverb was accomplished (mostly) with an external reverb tank or unit.

Avatar 4:14pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Imho Surf is underrated as an early DropOut DIY culture overall. Surf Gittar certainly pushed the boundaries of Amplification - with Fender on the West Coast - & DickDale of course. When TheWho pushed Marshall to up the ante in London, Fender amps were the direct model.

  4:19pm

i just had a debacle of my own... lsu was horrid.
  4:20pm
Ungabunga:

For me the most interesting aspect of surf music is the introduction of middle eastern scales. The arabic influence created a new sense of mystery and darkness that hadn't been present in rock music beforehand, and that led to the evolution of darker and heavier metal. The idea that entire new genres and aesthetics can emerge from mixing of existing influences is fascinating to me
  4:20pm
Frank In Queens:

If they don’t plan it on winning tomorrow, they can do me a favor and not win tonight. At least then I can go to Mama Tried tomorrow.

  4:24pm

“Imho Surf is underrated as an early DropOut DIY culture overall.” Yep. And yeah, I think there is a direct line between surf rock and psychedelic rock. It was fringe, guitar oriented rock n roll. Plus weird effects, and no vocals freed bands up to play ‘freakout jams’.
  4:25pm

i don't know that one, Frank!! will have to check it.
