We canoed all the way around Manhattan Island (your insular city of the Manhattoes, girdled round by wharves as Indian isles by coral reefs) on Sunday. Got a good pic of Yankee Stadium from the Harlem River. So much development in the south Bronx! Big ol' gentrification towers going up.

Hey there, Mxter Baba, Jason, Phillip, James, dreamy, Michael, Jan, Chris, luka, and all those yet to decloak!

I was high school age for Disco - in smalltown NewHampshuh - & it was just the wrong age & place. As I see it - Disco had a real Arc - as many things do. It started in Urban places as a real movement with People of Color & Queers & heavy drug users. Then it took completely over everywhere for years ! Where I was - the Jocks loved it & we were the Rawkers & the Stoners.
Even so - one loved DonnaSummer & some of it that was clearly just good Pop or Funk ...but there was Disco Duck (Formulaic in other words) & yer Dad wanting to be Travolta & no Rawk in club or on the Radio ...yerknow - I maintain the blowback didn't come out of nowhere.

...& of course I imagine the era was rife with MDMA & everybody was making this textural sound cause of that level with whatever degree of self-awareness...

That a 'Pop' Artist must Progress or @ least Change - can we not credit Dylan & TheBeatles ?

...well - Jazz always did ...People always have. It characterizes Modernism - Shock of the New blablah...

...even TheBeatles - when I held the 2009 Remasters box in one hand ...it was less Albums than This Work & say 13ish (actually short) Chapters in it ...you know something is a Museum Piece once it's miniaturized & under glass...

@Julie and also with KB and Cocteau, the context of Reagan's 80's and MTV and 80's music in general, it was just a unique time and place for them...

@RevolutionRabbit - totally! These bands are not unique. Look at Prince, etc. More the experience of being a fan and how the records hit when they came out... subjective but definitely different than having the whole catalogue at your fingertips is all.

I've always been ambivalent about Prince. But - that was part of my experience of him that way ! One was always wondering what all that Talent was going to be applied to... & then that abruptly ceased in his 50s - some weird age. Fentanyl !

Yeah frankly I'm surprised they were in the game as early as this in the 1980s, in my ignorance. Impressive.

I would not say no if you should have more Cocteau Twins-related bonus hours, like of Robin Guthrie-produced stuff or Elisabeth Fraser's collaborations/solo stuff. That said, this was lovely and no matter how crap day I might have had, whenever your show's on everything is just all right. Thanks Julie!
