Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

Rest in peace, Pharoah Sanders.

RIP Pharoah Sanders indeed!
Will only be here a short while (heading into NYC, Klezmatics show in Washington Square Park, which I heard about on your Monday sub show).

Hello Dave and everyone.. sad day here in LA.

Brian in UK:

Hello Dave & cats.

Remember seeing Pharoah around 1980. He drifted on from stage right playing Comin' Thro' The Rye. Never quite understood why. What I did feel though was the power.

Mr. Oxford:

I am glad Sanders was able to record and release the Promises album with Floating Points and London symphony orchestra last year. I believe it was his only album in the 21st century.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm

Wonderful sounds-will likely hear more on phone rift's NJ Transit.

I remember seeing Satch on TV, Sullivan show and the like. He always had a handkerchief on hand, he was a profuse perspirer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm
StringOFperils:

I have a great version of You've Got to Have Freedom on Pharoah Sanders Live [Theresa records 1982]. Used to listen to that LP a lot back in the 80s, and when I finally get around to fixing my turntable (sigh) I probably will again
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
Michael 98145:

And this is perhaps one of the greatest recordings of all time. IMHO.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
StringOFperils:

@neveract > It's an old Scottish turntable (circa 40 years ago), an Ariston RD-40...2 speed DC motor, so 2 separate pitch controls...I have a better arm I wanted to put on it...and I have to move the whole system down into a cramped basement space, so the imperious old folks next door don't kill me (or vice versa)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm
StringOFperils:

They made a better one, that was the prototype for the LINN Sondek, but mine ain't it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
Michael 98145:

( wow. envy. www.vinylengine.com... )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm
StringOFperils:

Yep, that's it, and that's the arm I want to put on it when I'm brave enough, and things are more organized around here (I've been independently rebuilding said basement)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
StringOFperils:

...but we should close our eyes and listen to the great man now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
doctorjazz:

I have a Line, love it!

The Creator may have a master plan, but NJ Transit sure doesn't...
Had to change trains at Newark. It's usually fairly tight, leaves for NY soon after you get in. So, of course, my train was 20 minutes late, missed the transfer, have to wait about 45 minutes for the next one.
Did I say I hate NJ Transit?
(Loving the sounds, though...)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm
Michael 98145:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm

Yeah, all this old equipment is finicky, but if it's set up right it's like having the band in the room

.. I'm an audio outcast..I'm still using a pair of nice old 1200 Mk5's and an M5G I bought when Technics announced they were leaving the TT business in 2010 (I think). Then they came back..lol Ortofon stereo carts and a supply of Shure mono carts

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm

Technics has become very desirable in the audiophile turntable world (after being looked down on a direct drive for years).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
Michael 98145:

My Technics SL-DD33 has served me faithfully since i don't know when
  4:06pm
DavidJ:

I have a Linn Axis (their “entry level” - “only” $1K in 1990) that went on the fritz. I recently replaced all the electrolytic caps on the power supply board, it was harrowing. If I had it to do over I’d send it out to have it done. Delicate multilevel circuit board, finicky to solder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm
Michael 98145:

Saddened by the cause, but this has been a wonderful, wonderful show
Avatar 4:08pm
neveract:

I was assigned the bass clarinet in the university band in college. I "Walter Mitty'd" about being another Dolphy, but usually I was just holding the same 5-6 notes for innumerable bars..lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
doctorjazz:

Lovely!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm
Dave Sewelson:

all you need is 5 or 6 notes...
Avatar 4:21pm
Jeff Moore:

All you have to do is play them the right way, at the right time! Sounds simple!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm
Gina Bacon:

I was enlisted to play bass clarinet too, neveract! It was challenging during the parades, because I was (and am) tiny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm
StringOFperils:

It's your brain and your ten fingers that are the challenge...and then there can be pedals too, depending on what you're wrestling with....5 or 6 notes (with deep engagement) could be a universe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm
StringOFperils:

...and of course, breath. [kybd thinking ^^]

My younger daughter was assigned bass clarinet in elementary school, and, like Gina, it was about as big as she was. Made the cutest sight! (She dropped it as soon as she could...)
  4:37pm

Same here, doc. I graduated from clarinet to bass clarinet and tenor saxophone in 8th grade. I remember the crook of the bass clarinet just about reaching my forehead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm

Sitting down, I mean. I wasn't extremely short.

Fortunately, I hadn't heard Dolphy then.

Thank you Dave for a wonderful tribute to one of Jazz music's greatest and most spiritual figures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm
Gina Bacon:

Thank you, Dave. This was a really great tribute!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm

Well, the upside of being stuck in mass transit hell (now waiting for downtown A or C) is getting to hear this wonderful tribute. Thanks, David!

We're out of time for one of my favorite Sanders tracks, "Our Roots (Began in Africa)," but no matter. The man's career can't be reduced a a single program. Thank you for the uplift.
