Favoriting September 18, 2022: Hear Emily Play
New York City-born, New Jersey-raised jazz guitarist Emily Remler lived only 32 years, and recorded just 6 albums, passing away just as she had reached new heights in musical composition and performance. Her influences began with Wes Montgomery, Herb Ellis, John Coltrane, Egberto Gismonti, and Jimi Hendrix, but she emerged with her own sound, winning over fans and musicians alike. She was convinced that as a woman in the nearly monolithically sexist jazz scene of the eighties, she had to prove herself every time she took the stage.

I've been sipping Virgin Glen Passaic Sours* from my double cocktail cap while driving back from upstate these last few hours. Bloody heck. Thank you, Herr DJ, for the musical homing beacon.

* Virgin Glen Passaic Sour
2oz Glen Passaic
1oz Jersey virgin's blood
3/4oz simple syrup
3/4oz lemon juice

Dry-shake Glen Passaic and Jersey virgin's blood, add remaining ingredients, shake over ice and serve up in a sippy hat.
NB: I do not want to hear about any of you sacrificing Jersey virgins at the altar of this cocktail. There are few enough to go around. The right way to do it is to open an interest-bearing savings account at your local blood bank. They're desperate these days, so they'll comp you a pint to get started -- plenty enough for your first few nights of vampiric stupor.

It's really sad to think she was pressured to have anything to prove for being a woman. Absolutely wonderful player. Pretty straight ahead Bop styles - & not an adventurous tone, rather a round full one with precise intonation & 'diction' for lack of better words ...& a rich full technical accomplishment entwined with a playful delightful energy & phrasing.

Back in my failed jazz guitar lesson days, I had a book of Bird transcriptions to practice. Man, are those things hard-never got them up past one quarter of their appropriate tempo.

They are incredible, though, even though I was never able to play them, picked up and appreciation of bebop , chord extension, etc...

It's really an understated kind of awesomeness. Like ...not hitting balls out of the park - but loading every damn base reliably with a calm grin. (...ugh Sports metaphor...)

I liked your sport metaphor Rev D.

...yerknow - in Rawk, mistakes & imprecise tone are practically objectives ...but with the Jazzbos & their horns - you can't eff around. The Acoustic just underscores it ...tho Electric will also amplify your flubs if you didn't know...

I'm not sure they don't often hit it outta the park, it's just that sometimes it goes by so fast, you'd need instant replay to be able to appreciate (or lots of listens).

hi, fred. Market is over the the year early in October, and I wonder if there is anything on your reading list from the past ~2 years you would recommend for the up-coming reading season(s)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm
fred:

@Sem: Unfortunately no. A shortage of bus drivers means I don't have space to read. Did you like Harlem Shuffle?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm
Sem:

Did not read it yet, but keen to follow along with Mr. Whitehead.
I keep forgetting that bus travel was integral to your reading regime. To what level of hell has Paris descended?

Lest I become preoccupied in the next little while... thanks to all again for the today's togetherness thing. It's most awfully groovy, don't you think? Let's next week!!!

Sounds like how Commuting was my Podcast time away from Streams (89% FMU) ...down to almost zer0 in Pandemic Times. As for Reading - my eyesight has impacted my Literacy I'm afraid - if not my hoarding of books ...just when I commune with all you lot of intellectuals too... Must get the right spectacles & LED together for this print thing...

@Sem: Buses used to be 10 minutes apart at most, these days it can be one hour, so I just walk to the subway, 20 minutes, no big deal, but no reading. Do read Harlem Shuffle though, he's back in great form after a lull
