Zipperhead7:

Good morning Doug and Drumedarians! I was corresponding with a colleague, and he offered this as dimmest student test answer he ever received:
I'd done two sociology intro lectures on imperialism, slavery and racism, to Business Studies students, and had tried to point out how concocted ethnic stereotypes were by pointing out that in the Middle Ages the Bulgars were reputed to be hundred percenter sodomites, from which the English word Bugger. We can see now how absurd this was, I pointed out, because if that stereotype were true, there would be no Bulgarian nation today. Ignorance of other peoples breeds stupid ideas about them.
I then went on to point out that initial European views of Africans emphasized their visual distinctness but equally the absence of Christian, even Jewish or Islamic faith. But even then, conversion could take place, and then, only visual difference would remain. This underscored the much greater tenacity of the fusion of chattel slave status, current or projected, with skin color, which could not be changed; and both with the gigantic profits generated by plantation slavery.
"To start with," wrote the student, " the whites thought the blacks just looked different and had different religions. But then news started coming back that the blacks were buggering each other on the plantations in the West Indies, and this is when racial prejudice really began."

Basil Coetzee on tenor sax here. Maybe the most famous LP on the As-Shams/The Sun record label is Dollar Brand's Mannenberg: Is Where It's Happening. Coetzee plays tenor sax on that album, too. (He is so closely associated with the tune, his nickname became "Mannenberg.")

Zipper, that reminds me of a place I use to go late at night in Pasadena - Bills Chicken in a Bag. Bill was this dried-up old guy that always had a cigarette with a long ash dangling from his lip as he stood over the deep fryer. They had the best jukebox - Jimmy Reed, Bobby Blue Bland ect. About once a month they would have a grease fire and have to close for a few days to clean up the mess. I would go in there about midnight stoned off my rocker and get a bag of wings. I would drive around in my maroon VW station wagon throwing chicken bones out the window.

Franco T @10:53 - two questions. 1, weren't you at all concerned that all that cigarette Ash was finding its way into the frying oil, or worse directly on the chicken itself. Which is probably why there was a monthly fire because he would ignite it with the cigarette Ash. And 2, weren't you afraid of getting pulled over by the dirty coppers. Did you get stopped or busted for that matter? And your description of throwing chicken bones at the window while driving Stoney in the middle of the night sounds so relaxing and a content way to be. @Franco T: being young and a jerk kind of goes hand in hand. I'm certain I was a jerk more times than I like to admit to.and i like you was very thin and whispy, because i was people look at me and figure I wasn't easy take down to work out there own frustrations and angst out on, otherwise they wouldn't have given me any shit. And because of all that I try not to draw attention to myself to avoid getting the booger snot kicked out of me. So I kind of developed a nice easy-going type of guy who wouldn't give anyone any problems. And I knew this guy it was like how you distract yourself and like to hang with me because I would be a good influence on him that curved is idiot trouble making ways. Of course some of it backfired on me and I got in trouble for his shit, it was a live and learn situation. I learned that I was kind of a glutton for punishment and was willing to take it just because I see something decent in people
