I learned of the suicide while standing on line (with Todd Rundgren!) at Mann's Chinese Theater on Hollywood Blvd. for the premier of The Shining. We had been planning to go to the West Coast shows, and so we were mighty disappointed.

But to my taste Curtis was the weak link of the band. I acquired all of their early stuff as it was released, but by the mid-'80s I'd unloaded it all, including the rare French single of "Dead Souls," which is perhaps my favorite song of their.. I now have a sampling of New Order, no Joy Division. No regrets.

...intersting comparison. Narrative I've put together for Ian is that being an ever more popular & engaged Front Man for a Rawk band - & being progressively epileptic - were an impossible combination. Drake just crapped out on playing Live & promoting @ all... & I guess Cobain is one where the full Popularity landed square on his head & crushed him flat...

Tuesday: saw a girl in a Joy Division 'Steely Dan' shirt at the deli, then a guy in the Wilco show food line with a Sonic Youth 'Steely Dan' shirt. Blew my mind.

Can't relate to Ian being the weak link - the Writing & Singing & Presence. Admire New Order for persisting as something different.

I understand that Ian Curtis was charismatic and commanded attention. I, too, appreciated it. But New Order (to me, if I have to make the explicit qualification) is a genuinely inventive band, talented and focused on, essentially, pop that works. Joy Division was vaguely about a mood expressed by a so-so vocalist and a band that wanted to spring out of punk into something more brooding. But as I hear them, they were mostly a one trick pony: brood, brood, brood. My guess is that New Order were sadly relieved to be free of that tenor.

So ...what do NewOrder have to say as relevant or memorable? There's 'BlueMonday' - which I'm gathering was practically JoyDivision anyway ...then what? Some dancey synthpop that's relatively featureless, dated & disposable ?

I don't hold pop or rock musicians to a standard of relevant or memorable meaning. I adore lots of groups the meaning of whose work is irrelevant and forgettable. I mean, Pilot, "Magic"!
