Favoriting Cratedigger's Lung with Rich In Washington: Playlist from August 19, 2022 Favoriting

A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

The power of suggestion has resulted in my having spinach and goat cheese pizza for dinner. Thank goodness I had one in the freezer.

I've been time-confused all day. Had the day off from work because I was supposed to have a check-up at the doc's office, but doc cancelled because she felt sick. Then I found out a cabinet fell off the wall in the basement and crashed onto my clothes dryer which resulted in a costly repair.

I watched Spaceballs for the first time ever last month and thought it was brilliant. Why hadn't I seen it before? Probably a convergence of disliking H'wood films at the time or something like that.

Was very lucky as a kid in the mid-70s when my brother worked at Goldmark Industries (Peter Goldmark invented the LP and other things). My bro transferred films to videotape. He could bring a player (they were top-loading) and all the cassettes he could carry on the train home each Friday. Young Frankenstein and Taking of Pelham 1-2-3 were two titles that we watched over and over and over. So good and uncut.

I've watched Young Frankenstein a few times in the past couple of years. TCM shows it. I pretty much only watch TCM and some occasional shows on HBO. My DVR is filled up with movies from TCM and I catch up slowly when I have time. I'm watching Barry Jenkins' Medicine for Melancholy (2008) now. It's beautiful and the soundtrack is great.
  9:32pm
Dean:

My son gave me the DVD of Young Frankenstein a few years ago. I've watched it with him and his sister, and we've had a great time. But I think they both realize how important Blazing Saddles is as a document of the times in which we live. I myself don't like movies; I don't get the medium at all. But somehow Blazing Saddles survives that hurdle for me.

I had the "A Big 10-8 Place" CD in my possession once and ripped it to my hard drive before regrettably selling it off, along with the "Guns" CD.

I move every few years and I jettison some portion of my physical media hoard every time I do. My digital is scattered over various drives and I swear I am actually going to organize all of it this winter

Feldy:

Rich, what’s your KBOO show like? Similar?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Krys O.:

I've amassed collections and lost them and amassed some things back. The story of my records/cassettes is generally sad, but I can't get depressed over it. There are other aspects of my life that do that just fine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Rich in Washington:

Yes but lately I'm sort of playing what I think a late night radio listener of KBOO might enjoy. It's still weird, but nothing really out there or outré. I don't know why. It's just the way my show on that station has evolved. I have NO idea who might be listening.

Feldy:

Kat, the digital media, for being easier to manage, is also very time consuming I think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Rich in Washington:

I've dumped records over the years and then got really sad that I did it. Now I'm a full on horder. My Coco's really understanding.

Steinski said he has everything backed up on several multi-terrabyte hard drives
  10:41pm
Feldy:

Do you guys have an idea how many people are streaming?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Kat in Chicago:

Bless Coco. i've definitely bought records again that I got rid of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Kat in Chicago:

OMG WHAT IS THIS
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Krys O.:

Indeed, pre-Internet, the only way you knew someone listened to your show would be if they called or wrote to you. I had some folks who would call me regularly and others that were pen pals. I'm always floored when someone remembers my show from over 30 years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Zipperhead7:

Me too, Kat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Rich in Washington:

No, Feldy. I don't want to know. Been on a station where I could see the stats and it's kinda disheartening. Love chatting with y'all and like to think there are even more listening but not on chat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Rich in Washington:

I miss crazy callers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Kat in Chicago:

When we were in the studio we had that thing where you could see the streaming count too. I couldn't help looking at it. We had a lot of people listening to the over-air broadcast too though, still do.

Kat in Chicago:

I don't miss they guy who demanded I play Chemical Brothers every week for a couple of months. Or the ex who called in. Other than that, I really liked my callers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Krys O.:

There was a woman who called all the DJs and she would yammer on an on. I'd have to cut her off and get back to my show. On the other hand, I had a fan who was a limo driver and he would call in between jobs when I was on the overnights.

i used to call wfmu in the middle of the night sometimes.
Bethany, Stan, Tamar, ...Charlie Lewis?
a few others
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Krys O.:

Tangentially speaking, I sometimes call my cat Harvey, International Harvester for the band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Rich in Washington:

My most loyal listeners were cabbies, workers at the Franz Bread bakery, crazy drunk people, inmates at a nearby prison.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
coelacanth∅:

i was always ready to ditch the call, just waiting for a sign. pretty sure i was never a burden.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
ultradamno:

OK, ready for the next five hours
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Kat in Chicago:

People in prison had access to call you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Krys O.:

I wouldn't imagine you were anything like that caller, coel. She was a rare animal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
ultradamno:

Yeah, would you have to accept the call first?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Krys O.:

My ex used to get mail from a woman in a mental institution. She demanded that he help her get released. We think she might have come across one of his cassette catalogs from the 80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah, not sure why, but for a few weeks, most DJs were getting inundated with calls from the nearby prison. Like maybe a rash of smuggled phones. Most just wanted to hear certain songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Krys O.:

I missed the first half hour, Rich, but it's been an amazing show. You've earned a scepter and a sash. Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm

Thanks, Krys O!

A little late for Desperate Bicycles "Advice On Arrest" to do much good, did any band have a song with prison break instructions?
  10:53pm
Androu B.:

This is reminding me of a radio show that came on late nights where the host would encourage and invite witnesses to UFOs to call in and describe their accounts. I only came across it the one time while scanning the AM dial.
  10:54pm
Feldy:

I know I’ve mentioned this before, but Cratedigger’s Lung is the best show name. Love the show.

I don't know if you could have those kind of call-in shows anymore without them becoming Qanon vehicles.
